Shirley Jean Franklin



Funeral services for Shirley Jean Franklin, 68 of Giddings, Texas, are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 24, 2022 at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings with Brother Asberry Mitchell Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Giddings City Cemetery in Giddings. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2022 from 10:30 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Friday, June 24, 2022 from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family will be present for visitation Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Shirley Jean Franklin was born into this world on May 2, 1954 in Floydada, Texas. She was the loving daughter of Asberry Mitchell Sr. and Vera (Johnson) Mitchell. She obeyed the gospel of Jesus Christ and was baptized at Floydada Church of Christ. Jean was united in holy matrimony to Eugene Franklin on June 25, 2007 in Giddings, Texas. Shirley and Eugene were blessed with almost 15 years of marriage.

Shirley worked as a House Parent for the Giddings State School for 35 years. She was also a member of the lady’s program at South Oak Church of Christ. Jean loved shopping for and collecting antiques, especially elephant figurines. She also enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, reading, and taking care of her family and grandchildren. God called Jean back to Himself on Sunday, June 19, 2022. After a blessed life of 68 years, she passed away peacefully at St. David’s Medical Center South in Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vera Mae Mitchell and Asberry Mitchell Sr.; two brothers, Ennis Mitchell and Carl Mitchell, and two sisters, Josephine Mitchell and Golly Moore.

Jean leaves behind to mourn her passing her husband, Eugene Franklin of Giddings; two sons, Robert and wife Quan Smith of Cypress and Steven Nolan of Georgetown; her grandson, Bryson Smith of Cypress; three step-daughters, Krystal Moore and husband Romeo of College Station, Kyndra Rayford and husband David of Bryan, and Kyeshea Brathwaite and husband George of Cypress; six brothers, Asberry Mitchell Jr. and wife Beverly of Temple, Robert Mitchell of Austin, John Mitchell and wife Lillie Mae of Hutto, Alfred Lee Mitchell of Taylor, Virgil Mitchell of Dallas, and LeMarion Mitchell and wife Tina of Dallas; two sisters, Juana Faye Moore and husband Douglas of Giddings, Demetrius Richardson and husband Lawrence of Round Rock, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Serving as pallbearers will be D’Ron Carney, Jermaine Mitchell, Aron Lazare, Michael Mitchell, Demetrick Richardson, and Terrance Mitchell.

The Franklin family recommends that memorials be made to the South Oak Church of Christ in Dime Box.
