Lee County Celebrates Black History Month

Former Texas State Representative Wilhelmina Delco
- Giddings Middle School held a Black History Assembly on February 10. Maegen Bradley read a poem by Maya Angelou entitled “Caged Bird.” The students and staff of GMS were honored to have former Texas State Representative Wilhelmina Delco as their guest speaker.

From the moment she began to speak, Mrs. Delco had the students and staff enthralled. Her message centered around the “Four B’s: Bible, Books, Bucks and Brotherhood.” Her profound message was well received by the entire student body, which gave Mrs. Delco a resounding standing ovation.

Mrs. Delco began her career in public service as a member of the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees in 1968. She was also on the founding Board of Trustees of Austin Community College. Through the years, she has served in leadership positions and numerous local, state and national organizations including the American Association for Higher Education, Educational Testing Services, National Girl Scout Council, KLRU-TV-18 Board of Directors, Huston-Tillotson College and the Carnegie Foundation Advisory Panel for the Advanced Leadership Program Services Advancement of Teaching Governance Board.
She has received honorary degrees from nine colleges and universities. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fisk University in Tennessee.
