Officials from the American Red Cross of Central Texas and Lee County schools signed an agreement Thursday, February 10 to finalize a partnership to operate shelters in Lee County during times of disaster. Superintendents from Dime Box, Giddings, and Lexington independent school districts as well as Immanuel Lutheran School of Giddings finalized the agreement. The signing took place at the Lee County Courthouse.
The agreement allows the Red Cross to open and operate shelters at any school in the county when events warrant and establishes pre-identified and American Red Cross-approved facilities before disaster strikes. By establishing local shelters and training volunteers to man them, communities like Lee County can expect more efficient and quicker disaster response times.
In fact, there are currently two Red Cross shelter teams in place in Lee County. Each member of the teams are trained to provide the staffing resources and support needed when a disaster such as a flood or tornado occurs. Volunteers are trained in shelter operations and will soon take casework training so that they may be able to assist families with food, clothing and other emergency items.
“We are extremely pleased with this partnership to help citizens of Lee County,” said Wayne Brennessel, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Central Texas. “It is comforting to know that if a disaster occurs in the community, the Red Cross will be able to open shelters at a moment’s notice and immediately begin assisting families in need.”
