Lexington Chamber of Commerce News

by Cindy Gibson, Lexington Area Chamber of Commerce Director -
This year, the Chamber has undertaken an ambitious program of events. Many of these events are being tried for the first time, so we hope to see you there and have your help in carrying them off!

At last Monday’s Chamber meeting, we approved a project to create and sell matted photo prints of downtown Lexington scenes - the Gazebo and the Log Cabins - through the Chamber. Look for these to make their debut at this year’s Homecoming.

Homecoming will be early this year - starting on Thursday, April 28 and going through Sunday, May 1. (Homecoming is always the weekend before Mother’s Day.) A new event at this year’s Homecoming will be a Little Miss Lexington contest. We hope to have more details on this event within the next few days, but if you know of any little girls who ought to be part of this pageant, please let us know.

Another change at Homecoming will be that wrist bands will be sold for $2 to those over 21 who wish to drink alcoholic beverages on the Square (a different colored band will be given free of charge to minors). These bands will serve the dual purpose of assisting the police with monitoring the consumption of alcoholic beverages during Homecoming and help the Chamber to raise funds to defray the ever-increasing costs of Homecoming. The police have asked for our assistance with monitoring alcohol consumption, so this was proposed as the best way to do that.

On Thursday, March 10, the Chamber will host a mixer, to which all members of the community - and especially the business community - are invited. It will be from 6-8 p.m. at the Chamber building. Jeff and Melody Hooper are organizing this mixer. There will be snacks and beverages, and we would really like you to plan to drop in.

The Chamber is also busy planning its Appreciation Dinner, which will be at the Eagle’s Wing church on Thursday, April 21. All Chamber members should try to attend, as we will be honoring those who helped the Chamber with its programs and events during 2004. The dinner will feature a Country theme, and will include a band and speaker. We also hope that you will help us compile a list of those who should be honored.

The membership committee of the Chamber is on a Membership Drive. It is important for the community and for businesses to join the Chamber, so that when - for example - the Chamber asks for support or approval for programs from the City Council, the Chamber can be seen as speaking for the entire community and/or for the entire business community. There are many things we could be doing to help the business community in Lexington, and we can do it more effectively with the inclusion of more people. If you have not joined - either as an individual or as a business, please consider it. You get a lot for your membership fee ($12 for individuals and $30 for business members) and your support greatly helps the Chamber in its efforts. A membership form can be picked up at the Chamber Office located downtown on the Square, across from City Hall. This year, we will be issuing membership cards to all members and decals for display to all business members.
