Lexington Police Step Up Clean Up Compliance

Lexington Chief of Police Randall Davis
- Chief Randall Davis of the Lexington Police Department was instructed by the City Council last week to remind all citizens that April has been designated as clean up month. The Lexington Police Department has been given the task to assist with the clean up by stepping up enforcement of city ordinances. In preparation of the approaching clean up in April and annual Homecoming activities occurring in May, the Police Department is requesting a voluntary clean up of debris and refuse that has collected over the past years.

Chief Davis said, “Concerns have been raised over citizens being notified of the stepped up enforcement of ordinances. It is the intent of the Lexington Police Department to enforce the ordinances as instructed by the City Council. It is not anybody’s intent to levy fines against any citizens if compliance can be achieved through other means. The assessment of fines will be reserved only for persons refusing to adhere to ordinances and only as a last means of enforcement.”

The Lexington Police Department has been conducting a city-wide survey of ordinance violations. They are preparing notification letters to be sent to property owners and occupants that are in violation of ordinances that address abandoned vehicles, unsafe or hazardous accumulation of debris, and properties with over-grown vegetation.

The City of Lexington will be furnishing a free collection center at the Lexington City Yard for citizens of Lexington to take their refuse. The collection center will be manned from 8am to 5pm on weekdays during the month of April. Arrangements have also been made to keep the collection center open on Saturdays as well.

The first step of enforcing these ordinances will be encouraging the citizens to voluntarily begin coming into compliance during the next several weeks without further intervention. Persons not coming into compliance will be sent a “notice of violation” in letter form detailing the violations.

Additional steps, as a last resort and if it were to become necessary, may include the issuance of citations or summons to Municipal Court.
