The Lee County Jr. Livestock Show raised over $3,500 more this year than last year during the Annual Sale. A total of $283,086 was raised as a near-capacity crowd gathered in the Sheriff’s Posse arena. The Grand Champion Steer award was earned by Lexington FFA member, Kelsey Lehmann. It brought $7,500, purchased by First National Bank in Giddings, Pumpco and Insurance Network of Texas.
This isn’t Kelsey first experience at the area show. Last year, her steer took second place and her little brother, Tanner Banks, won Grand Champion in 2003. Kelsey is a senior at Lexington High School.
This year’s Reserve Champion Steer went to Meghan Schatte from the Serbin 4H organization. Her steer brought $4,000 at auction, purchased by Goodson Lumber, Bobby Lehmann Trucking, Gaeke Construction, Morgan Testers, Dan and Bev Johnson, Randy Stewart and Brookshire Brothers. Meghan is also an experienced showman. Her steer was the 2004 Grand Champion winner.
There were over 317 entries in this year’s show, many of which were entered by experienced exhibitors within the Lee County FFA and 4H organizations. Brandon Meyer with Lexington 4H took the Grand Champion award for Hogs. Cody Mertink with Serbin 4H won the Reserve Champion Hog. The Grand Champion Lamb was shown by Kent Kieschnick with the Lincoln 4H organization. Rachel Gillum, also with Lincoln 4H, had the Reserve Champion Lamb.
The Grand Champion Goat was shown by Kandace Namken, Lincoln 4H. The Reserve Champion was shown by Dustin Namken, keeping it all in the family.
The Grand Champion Bred Commerical Heifer this year was shown by Reyse Jatzlau with the Dime Box FFA. The Reserve Champion was shown by another Dime Box FFA member, Dale Korth.
Thomas Hartfield with the Giddings FFA took the Grand Champion Open Commerical Heifer. The Reserve Champion was shown by Curtis Ford, a member of the Dime Box FFA.
Melanie Kieschnick, Lincoln 4H-er, won the Grand Champion in the Broiler Division. The Reserve Champion ribbon went home with Courtney Kaiser with the Serbin 4H Club.
Travis Tienert, also with the Serbin 4H Club, won Grand Champion in Rabbits and the Reserve Champion award went to Mason Becker, a fellow club member.
In the Food Division, Grand Champion Regular Cake winner was Mary Hinze with Serbin 4H. The Reserve Champion Regular Cake winner went to Lexington 4H member Jeffery Marburger.
Amanda Dube, no stranger to the Food Division, won Grand Champion in Decorated Cakes. This was Amanda’s second time in three years to take the top award. Last year, she won Reserve Champion in the same category. Amanda is a member of Lexington FFA.
The Reserve Champion of Decorated Cakes was exhibited by Emilie McManus, another Lexington student who is a member of the Northwest Lee County 4H Club.
