Double Fatality North of Lexington
-
In a single-car accident on Friday, March 11, just before 5 pm, one mile north of Lexington on Hwy 77, two Oklahoma residents were killed and four others injured. John Lemaster, Jr., 72, and wife Bobbye Lemaster, 69, of Miami, Oklahoma, were both pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Nick Hester. The Lemasters were passengers in a van driven by Glen Reynard, also of Miami, when the vehicle ran off the roadway, striking a tree.
Preliminary reports from the Department of Public Safety indicate that the 1994 Ford Van, driven by Reynard, was northbound on Hwy 77 and attempted to pass another vehicle. The van then ran off the roadway to the right and struck a tree. Senior Trooper Bruce Oppermann conducted the on-scene investigation.
Reynard, 76, was traveling with his wife Ruth and two other couples. Bob and Betty Riley of Missouri and the Reynards were all transported to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin where Bob, 73, was listed in serious condition with a collapsed lung. Glen Reynard’s condition was unknown. Ruth Reynard’s and Betty Riley’s conditions were listed as good with minor injuries. It was confirmed that Mrs. Reynard was treated and released from the hospital later the same day.
The DPS report revealed all passengers except Bob were wearing their safety belts at the time of the crash.
Members of the Lexington Volunteer EMS and Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. The jaws-of-life were required to extract victims from the wreckage.
