News From the Chamber
by Cindy Gibson, Lexington Community Chamber of Commerce
-
Quite a few good things have happened in the past month. The Lexington Community Chamber of Commerce hosted a very successful Mixer, organized by Melody and Jeff Hooper (featuring brisket cooked by Graham Brown). Nearly 40 people attended and a few new members joined. Chamber membership is now up to 79. We are striving for 100. If you have not yet sent in or renewed your membership, please do so soon!
The Chamber has been leading a drive to get a new sound system for the Square and nearby areas, so that organizers of Homecoming, the Christmas events, BBQ Cookoff and other downtown events could play background music, make announcements and award prizes, announce events and parade entries, and otherwise improve everyone’s experience at those events. The funds have been raised with donations of $1,000 each from the Lion’s Club and the Chamber, and the nearly $3,000 balance funded by the EDC. The City has agreed to install the speakers and infrastructure. The system has been ordered and it is hoped that it will be installed and working by Homecoming (April 28 - May 1). Communication during events on the Square should be a whole new experience with this state-of-the-art sound system.
The Chamber will not be organizing a community-wide garage sale in April. We encourage those who had hoped to participate to go ahead and hold their garage sales on April 2.
A mechanical bull will be added to Homecoming this year, as well as a Little Miss/Mr. Lexington Pageant. The pageant will be Saturday, April 23. For more information, contact Sandy Janner at (512) 446-6369. Entry forms are available at the Chamber office and at banks and merchants in Lexington. The band for this year’s Saturday Street Dance is Pete Benz.
The Chamber has ordered decals for businesses and membership cards for all Chamber members. These attractive decals and cards, designed by Kevin Allen, will be distributed as soon as they arrive. We hope that all business members will display the decals indicating they are Chamber members. We are also working on a Business Directory for Lexington. If you own a business in or near Lexington, please be sure that we have your most current information so that your business is listed correctly.
Plans are firming up for the Chamber’s Appreciation Dinner on Thursday, April 21. More than 70 names have been suggested as honorees for this year’s dinner. All Chamber members are invited, so please mark your calendars and look for your invitations soon.
Don’t forget that many Chamber events and projects, as well as the two scholarships are awarded each year (which we hope to increase in the next few years). Hundreds of volunteer hours and funding are needed. The Chamber has to charge for some of its events in order to be able to put on other events free to the Community, as well as to fund the scholarships.
