Reported Child Abuse Cases Grow in Lee County
-
The Lee County Commissioner’s, in their regular meeting in Lexington, heard a presentation from representatives of the Children’s Advocacy Center, Family Crisis Center, CASA, and Child Protective Services. The representatives told the Court that for the year 2004, the alleged victims of abuse or neglect were up slightly, while the Confirmed Cases per 1,000 Child Population rose significantly, going from 12.6 to 15.0, when compared with 2003. The State average is 8.2, so Lee County is almost twice the State’s average. The representatives said that Lee County’s rise in confirmed cases is similar to what surrounding counties are also seeing.
Julie Elliott, a representative with the Children’s Advocacy Center in Bastrop, said, “The rise in cases in Lee and surrounding counties is due primarily to the increased awareness through education our agency and others like us are bringing to the local communities. People are becoming more aware of the resources we have to offer to kids and victims of abuse and they are more comfortable in knowing that we can provide a safe place for them.”
Elliott went on to say, “We are educating the communities through the schools and through local police departments. You can reach us at 512-303-3985 if you have any questions or concerns.”
The Court approved two resolutions proclaiming April as both Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. Statistics cited in the Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Resolution were very troubling for the Court. The resolution cites the fact that 1 in 5 Texas women and 1 in 20 Texas men have been victims of sexual assault. It also stated that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys would be sexually abused before they turn 18 and that 9 out of 10 of them may never tell authorities.
The Court then approved placing pinwheels on the Courthouse Lawn to represent the number of child abuse cased in Lee County. These pinwheels will remain in place for the month of April on behalf of CASA, Family Crisis Center, Child Protective Services, and the Children’s Advocacy Center.
