Last Thursday, April 21st, the City of Lexington presented a plaque to Opal Alexander, the widow of former Chief of Police, Bill Alexander. Mayor Robert Willrich, Sr. read from a resolution that named April 21, 2005 “Bill Alexander Day” in his honor.
About 100 people gathered on the Square to pay tribute to a man who dedicated a large portion of his life to the people of Lexington. Sheriff Joe Goodson spoke to the crowd, citing some of the character traits he admired most about the man who was a dedicated public servant as well as a good friend, husband and neighbor.
Mayor Robert Willrich also read a letter sent to the City from Bastrop County Sheriff Hernandez, who was unable to attend the gathering.
Then, last Sunday, hundreds of people turned out at the Lexington Park Building for a barbecue and auction in Bill’s behalf, where over $18,000 was raised to help offset the medical expenses Bill incurred after learning that he had cancer.
A delicious lunch of barbecue and all the fixin’s began at noon and was quickly sold out as people lined up to fill their plates.
The auction began at 2 and those who attended went home with a wide assortment of “treasures”. As has been the case in the past, when it comes to helping one another, Lexington proves itself to be a town filled with generous, giving people.
