City Sewer Improvements Scheduled to Begin This Week

Lexington City Mayor Robert Lee Willrich, Jr.
- The City of Lexington held a pre-construction conference on Monday morning with the contractor group making final arrangements for the start of the 2003 Community Development Block Grant, sanitary sewer improvement grant. The Wallace Group, Inc., Kerbow and Associates and Key Enterprises, Inc., are scheduled to begin work this week.

The $250,000 improvement grant was awarded to the City in May 2003. Improvements will include the installation of new and larger sewer trunk lines, as well as seal and/or replace existing manholes. Currently there are two major trunk lines entering the sewage treatment plant; a 1,200-foot line entering from the north and a 3,900-foot line entering from the south. These 50-year-old trunk lines are made of short sections of clay tile pipe that have broken, separated or become plagued with tree roots. Because of the line conditions and antiquated manholes, rainwater freely enters the lines to the collection system resulting in the sewage treatment plant being flooded out.

The City’s sewage treatment plant is a combination of mechanical and biological processes that must be maintained in-balance to ensure that the discharge waters meet permit requirements. Rains and extended wet weather conditions create high flows into the treatment plant interrupting proper function.

“There will be quite a bit of construction work going on for the next few months,” said Mayor Willrich. “The conversion has already begun from a 2400 to a 7200 electric conversion system. Now, our sewer improvement job is about to begin. So, please, for the safety of yourself and others, drive with caution,” stated the Mayor. The City recently applied for another $250,000 sewer grant for 2005.
