Johnson Wins County Commisioners Race

- In a record voter turnout, Democrat O.B. “Butch” Johnson was re-elected as County Commissioner for Precinct 3 in Tuesday’s election. This ended a campaign between Johnson and Republican John Higgins.

According to Carol Dismukes, Lee County Clerk, there are 8,779 registered voters this year, up from 8,647 in the last General Election. Out of those 8,779 registered voters in Lee County’s 15 precincts, 6,167, or 70% of the voters showed up at the polls this year and the majority of those voted to keep President Bush in office.

Butch Johnson, who has served as Commissioner of Precinct #3 since 1993, worked for the county for eleven years prior to being elected.

Johnson moved to Lee County in 1968. He and his wife, Brenda married in 1971. Brenda is the secretary for Lexington Independent School District Superintendent.

On the local level, running unopposed were L.E. “Buster” Dussetschleger as Constable of Precinct #3, Virginia Jackson as County Tax Assessor-Collector, Joe G. Goodson as County Sheriff, Ted Weems as County Attorney and Judge Terry Flenniken as District 21 Judge. All of these officials ran on the Democratic ticket.

As of press time, Democrat incumbent Robby Cook was leading the vote over Republican candidate Jean Kilgore in Lee, Bastrop and Fayette Counties for State Representative in District 17. He was a member of the Natural Resources Committee and co-author of the bill to establish the Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District. Cook and his family live in Eagle Lake, Texas.

Also reporting in Lee County, for District 335 Judge, Martin Placke was leading Reva Towslee Corbett with 4,010 votes to her 1,861. Michael E. Keasler was ahead of J.R. Molina for Place 6 in the Court of Criminal Appeals; Jan Patterson was ahead of Republican Bill Green for Justice, 3rd Court of Appeals, Place 4 and Bob Pemberton was ahead of Diane Henson for Justice, 3rd Court of Appeals, Place 6.
