City Park Receives $19,000 Grant from LCRA

City of Lexington
Mayor Robert Willrich, Sr.

- Mayor Robert Willrich, Sr. announced this week that LCRA has awarded a $19,000 grant to the City of Lexington for lighting for the walking trail in the City Park.

Lexington Memorial Park has been a work in progress for the past several years. With the assistance of an LCRA Community Parks Grant and a lot of help from many in the community, this property has been developed into a park that is utilized daily. “The property was gifted to the city for development and today the pavilion, gazebo, covered picnic tables, restrooms, play-scape, volleyball courts, and basketball court are truly the centerpiece of our town,” said Mayor Willrich.

The play-scape is enjoyed by children from Lexington schools and even school busses from other towns stop by in order that their students may play in the park when they are here to participate in other available activities. “We are happy to share this lovely park. The walking trail has been a boon to many older people who need a safe place to exercise,” continued the Mayor.

The grant will be used to provide lighting to the walking trail for the safety of those who walk early in the morning or in the evenings. Walking trail lighting will assure that the park is safer and better equipped to meet the needs of the Lexington community.

Last year, Lexington Economic Development Corporation purchased approximately 8 acres of property adjacent to the city owned park property and is in the process of clearing, leveling and preparing this property for use as soccer and little league practice fields. They are currently doing some work to take care of a drainage problem which has always prevented this property from being utilized. The drainage project will make a water-way through the park and enable the bog to be turned into a very usable addition to the park. This land will ultimately be deeded to the City.

The park property is also adjacent to a Lexington ISD owned tract of land which is utilized for practice fields as well as a rodeo arena used almost weekly by an active group of young horse enthusiasts.

The City Park is being used more and more by individuals and groups with many different interests. This grant for adding lighting to the walking trail in the park will indeed make the park even better, safer and more user friendly.
