A Day of Honor and Celebration

- Students of Lexington Independent School District held a community-wide Veterans Day program last Thursday in the A. P. Kleinschmidt gymnasium. Members of the Student Council took part in a variety of presentations including the singing of the National Anthem by Elizabeth Harkreader and readings of “I Am Old Glory” by Mary Ann Jenkins and “Old School” by Leslie Shirlberg.

Students from Lexington Elementary honored the veterans and their families by singing My Country Tis of Thee. The Lexington High School Eagle Band, under the direction of Band Director Stacy Gist, performed several patriotic songs and Jennifer Mohr concluded the program with taps.

Veterans and their families were invited to remain after the program for refreshments served by the Student Council. Many took time to find their names on the Wall of Honor along with the names of comrades. Several veterans shared stories about their buddies, tours of duty and their locations at infamous points in history such as the flag raising at Iwojima.

Over 700 military names were displayed on the Wall of Honor. More names are expected to be added next year as the war on terrorism continues.
