- The Eagles advanced in the football playoffs last Friday night after taking the area championship in a battle with the Dilley Wolves 32 to 13. This was the first time since 1997 that the Eagles have advanced to the regional playoffs.

The last time the Eagles won a regional playoff game was in 1978, when they advanced to the state finals, playing China Spring. This was the closest the Eagles have ever come to winning state. The winning coach that year was our very own Mike Organ.

Prior to 1978, Lexington had never won a regional football contest and had only advanced to the state playoff level two times. The first time was in 1964 when they advanced to the regional round, playing against Hubbard, and the second time was in 1968 when they played Rosebud-Lott in the bi-district game.

Jordan Peterson led the Eagles against the Dilley Wolves with three touchdowns, 180 yards rushing, a 39-yard punt return, a 15-yard interception and 85 yards passing. Phillip Brown added a touchdown, Will Brademan kicked 4 field goals and Andrew Woolridge capped the Eagle scoring with a safety.

The 2004 football season continues in Seguin, at Matador Stadium, Friday night at 7:30 pm when the Eagles take on the Yorktown Wildcats in the third round game. The winner of the Lexington/Yorktown match-up gets the winner of the Rogers/Refugio game next week.

Yorktown, located 75 miles east of San Antonio, was in the playoffs last year, losing in the 2nd round. They come into this game with a 10-2 record, while the Eagles come with an 11-1 record.

Yorktown is lowest rated team in the State still in playoffs. In one poll, they are ranked 80 in class 2A. Lexington, in same poll, is rated 13th in state. In contrast, the Wildcats defense is ranked #2 state wide in points allowed for Class 2A, averaging seven points per game. The defense will be challenged by Lexington’s 13th ranked scoring offense. The Eagles are ranked 12th in the state in margin of victory, averaging 28 points more than their opponents.
