Fatal Accident Claims Life of a Lexington Resident

A two-car accident, 2.5 miles south of Lexington on US 77 Saturday morning, claimed the life of Thomas Earl Heath, 57, of Lexington and T. J. Martinez, 21 of El Campo. According to a Department of Public Safety, at approximately 8:35 a.m., November 27, Martinez was northbound on US 77 in the outside lane. Martinez exited the roadway to the right. He overcorrected in an attempt to return to the roadway and crossed over all four lanes and into the lane of travel of Heath.
Heath, traveling southbound in the outside lane in a 1981 Ford F150 pickup truck, struck Martinez’s Honda Civic. The vehicles exited on the west side of the roadway.
Lexington Justice of the Peace Nick Hester was called to the scene to make the declaration of death for each driver. JP Hester confirmed that each driver was killed on impact. DPS Trooper Ordie Manner indicated in his report that both drivers were wearing their seat belts. Trooper Manner was assisted by Sergeant James Ward from Caldwell.
Heath, a truck driver with Newman and Keng Paving in Giddings, was reportedly on his way to work that morning. A complete obituary on Mr. Heath is printed on Page 3, Section D. Martinez was a Private First Class with the U. S. Army. He is survived by his mother and siblings.
