Jumper Faul Walks
-
A first-time jumper, Faul Corona of San Antonio, missed his landing Friday afternoon at the Austin Skydiving Center (ASC) located east of Lexington, creating a great deal of concern and confusion in the Lexington area. Cindy Gibson of ASC said that Corona was being radio guided through his jump to the landing sight, but simply wasn’t responding effectively enough to achieve a correct landing.
Ground crews at ASC saw Corona’s landing north of the school and immediately began a land search. The jump plane was brought down for refueling and sent back up for an air search. Corona’s bright pink and turquoise parachute was easily spotted approximately 1.2 miles north of the school and ground searchers were redirected.
However, before confirmation that Corona had been located reached the family, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Emergency 911 received a call from Sonia Corona explaining that the jumper had missed his landing.
Emergency dispatch calls went out to Sheriff’s deputies in the area as well as to the Lexington EMS and Lexington Volunteer Fire Department. Gibson from ASC reported that the emergency response teams lost communication between themselves, causing the search to appear more frantic than the situation actually was.
Gibson explained that Corona came down off field north of the school. He landed straddling a couple of trees, five to six feet in the air, released his canopy and fell to the ground. Corona returned to the skydiving school on foot.
“Wind speeds that afternoon were recorded between 10-15 mph, well within limits for jumping,” stated Gibson.
