Last Friday night, just about the whole town of Lexington and at least one chartered bus out of Giddings invaded Waco ISD Stadium to support the Eagle varsity football team in the State Semi Final match against Troup.
While the outcome of the game wasn’t exactly what everyone was hoping for, the stands were full of thousands of fans who came out to support Lexington’s team. The Troup Tigers beat the Eagles 42 to 13 with their phenomenal running game.
Lexington tried every method they could to stop the powerful rushing attack Troup presented. With the Tigers in a tight formation, the Eagles crowded 10 and 11 men near the line of scrimmage trying to stop the relentless running attack. Lexington had some success early in the game but, as the game wore on, the successes were less frequent.
Troup scored 22 consecutive points in the second quarter. E.J. Hawkins put six points on the board during the same period for Lexington and little did anyone know that would be the last Eagle score of the season.
Mayor Robert Willrich, Sr. summed up how the town felt best when he said, “I would like to express my congratulations to Coach Holcomb, his staff and all of our Lexington Eagle Mean Green Machine Football Players. You had a super year and you were blessed with no serious injuries.”
“Hold your heads up high. There will be another opportunity. You had the support from the citizens of Lexington and the surrounding communities. All you had to do was to look up in the bleachers during the games.”
