Eagle Baseball Field Gets a New Scoreboard

“This is way too cool!”

- The Lexington Eagles Baseball team has a new scoreboard. Last week, organizer Bennie Thornton oversaw the completion of this community project and announced a dedication ceremony scheduled for Monday, February 21at around 6:30 p.m. during a game against Rockdale. The dedication will present the scoreboard to the community in memory of Chase Thornton.

The new scoreboard will replace one that has seen many Eagle games and has served the team well, but some felt it was time for something new. When the old sign is compared with the new, you find that the new one is not only bigger (20ft x 13ft) but more colorful, easier to read and will cost much less to operate and maintain. The old scoreboard was only six feet by nine feet and did not display the scores by inning.

Spectrum Corporation out of Houston built the sign and Jeff Bishop, one of the owners, gave the organizers of the new sign a price that was more than fair.

Coach Jason Holcomb, LISD Athletic Director said, “This is one of the best scoreboards I have ever seen at any Class 2A facility. It is really state-of-the-art!”

Several people and organizations contributed time, money and effort over the last year and a half to see this project completed, including State Bank, Round Top Bank, Alcoa, LISD maintenance personnel, and many others in the community.

Chase Thornton was the son of Bennie and Candace Thornton and a 2002 graduate of Lexington High School. He was an outstanding athlete and active in LISD sports. Chase lost a battle with cancer in March 2003.

Bennie Thornton said, “We hope that through Chase’s Scholarship Fund this will be just the first of many upgrades to the baseball field. The one thing that we do know for sure is that Chase has looked at this scoreboard and gave it his approving comment, 'This is way too cool!'”
