W. D. “Woody” Dodd

August 23, 1920 - April 18, 2006

Woody Dodd, 85 of Rockdale, passed away in the Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale on April 18, 2006. He was a life long resident of Milam County and had lived in Rockdale most of his life. Graveside services were held on April 21, 2006 in the Sand Grove Cemetery near Milano.

He was born in Milam County on August 23, 1920 to Henry Edward and Maudie Lee (McLean) Dodd. On August 15, 1942, he and Carrie Middleton were married in Cameron, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Carrie of Rockdale and his sister, Kathryn Mason of Azle, Texas.

Woody is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews and great great nieces and nephews, but was thought of as Grand Paw. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Rockdale. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Army. He attended school at Sand Grove.

Velma Bertha Hielscher

March 29, 1924 – April 22, 2006

Velma Hielscher, 82, of Giddings passed away at her home on April 22, 2006. Rev. John Davis and Rev. Robert Tiner conducted the funeral service at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings on April 25, 2006. Burial was in the Giddings City Cemetery.

She was born in Winchester to Oscar and Emma Paulick Hielscher on March 29, 1924. She never married and was a rancher. Her parents and 2 brothers, Belmont and Cornell Hielscher preceded her in death. Numerous family members and friends survive her.

Vaughn D. Manning

March 2, 1924 – April 16, 2006

Vaughn D. Manning was born March 2, 1926 to Olie and Lena Knowles Manning in the community of Star, Texas. He went to his heavenly home on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006, at the age of eighty-two years.

In 1941, he enlisted in the US Army and soon thereafter was commissioned a second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. He served his country as a fighter pilot during WWII and spent most of his time in the South Pacific Theater of operations.

On June 13, 1942, he married Elva Juanita Adams. To this union three children were born: Charlotte Ann Stephenson, Patricia Gail Ruthven and Jimmy Wayne Manning. On August 16, 2001, after 59 years of marriage and joint service to the Lord, Juanita preceded Vaughn in death.

In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s Vaughn instructed flying, and developed a successful plumbing contracting company. During this time he became a follower of Jesus Christ and sensed a calling to full-time Christian service. To better serve the Lord and his church, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University in 1957 and a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1961.

Vaughn pastored numerous Southern Baptist congregations in the state of Texas. H spent a number of years in the 1960’s and 1970’s serving with the Baptist General Convention of Texas as a Church Building Consultant. From 1973 to 1977 he was Director of Missions for El Paso Baptist Association, and from 1982 through 1986 he served the Baptist congregations of the Bryan/College Station area as Director of Missions for Creath-Brazos Baptist Association. On January 23, 1993 he moved his letter for the last time, to First Baptist Church, Bryan, and soon thereafter began serving the congregation as a deacon.

On October 19, 2002, he and Billie Smith were married and they enjoyed three and one-half wonderful years together.

Survivors include his wife, Billie of Bryan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Charlotte and Dr. Paul Stephenson of Houston, and Trink and Jack Ruthven of Blue; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Colleen Manning of Franklin, Texas; a sister, Dorothy Martin of Warner-Robbins, GA; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Ben and Sherri Welch of Bryan, and Scott and Shannon Welch of Birmingham, AL; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Bryan Building Fund, P.O. Drawer 1299, Bryan, Texas 77806.

John M. (Jim) Moore

August 14, 1913 - April 16, 2006

Jim Moore, 92, died on April 16, 2006 in the Scott & White Hospital in Temple. He had lived in Little River, Texas since 2001. Prior to that, he had lived in Rockdale since 1953. Funeral services were held on April 20, 2006 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale.

Jim was born in Bristol, Texas on August 14, 1913. His parents were John Baxter and Lela Bell (Rutherford) Moore. He and LaVergne Mary Moreau were married on November 13, 1937 in Bunkie, LA. LaVergne died in September 1991. He married Velma L. Marks on June 19, 1993 in Rockdale. She preceded him in death in December 2005. His parents, brothers, Fred W, Earl A, Ed Madison, Arthur and O.B. Moore and sisters, Sippy Woods and Larua Mae Lanier also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his sons, John B. Moore of Michigan City, Indiana and Mitchel M. Moore of Del Rio, Texas. Six grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive him.

Jim worked as a heavy equipment operator for TXU Power Plant in Rockdale for 25 years and retired in 1977. He was a member of Little River Methodist Church.

Mary T. Koudelda

June 26, 1922 – April 19, 2006

Mary Koudelka was born in Brazos County on June 26, 1922. She passed away on April 19, 2006 in LaGrange at St. Mark’s Medical Center. Funeral services were held April 22 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dime Box with Rev. Father Ramon D. Frayna officiating.

She graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan in 1941. She married Theodore Koudelka and lived in Dime Box, where she was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She was very active in the church as a member of the Altar Society, teacher of CCD classes and more. She was honored with the very special “2004 Lumen Gentium” award from the Austin Diocese in recognition of her work on behalf of the church. She was also very active in the community until the time of her death.

Her parents, her husband in 1980, two brothers and 6 sisters preceded Mary in death.

Survivors include her sons Sammie Koudelka and wife Shirley of Moulton, Ted Koudelka Jr. and wife Nancy of Smithville, her daughters Frances Whitsel and husband Don and Dorothy Rackel and husband Doug all of Dime Box; grandchildren Amy and Eric Fritz of Weatherford, Morgan Koudelka of Spokane, WA, Joshua Koudelka of Smithville, Scott and Mary Ellen Whitsel of Ledbetter, Mike and Gina Whitsel of Rockdale, Nick and Shana Rackel of Austin, Dawn Rackel of Dime Box; great grandchildren Madison Fritz, Derek Devon and Emma Whitsel, and Whitney and Tanner Whitsel.

She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was a generous, hardworking, loving woman known to many as simply “Grandma Koudelka”. She will be missed tremendously, but will live on in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 8282 FM 141, Dime Box, TX 77853 or the Library at Dime Box High School.

Beatrice Hildegard Whitsel

September 10, 1923 – April 20, 2006

Beatrice Whitsel, 82, passed away at her home in Dime Box on April 20, 2006. Rev. Doug Robbins conducted the funeral service on April 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dime Box. Burial was in the Giddings City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gene Moerbe, Gene Walch, Scott Whitsel, Michael Whitsel, Ronald Suehs and Doug Rackel.

She was born on September 10, 1923 in Loebau, Texas to Adolph and Lydia Czimsky Kasper. She and T. C. Whitsel were married on August 24, 1940 at Dime Box. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons: Charles and Irene Whitsel of Buda and Donald and Frances Whitsel of Dime Box; three grandchildren: Kimberly Whitsel of San Francisco, Scott and Mary Ellen Whitsel of Ledbetter and Mike and Gina Whitsel of Rockdale; five great grandchildren: Derek, Devon and Emma Whitsel of Rockdale and Whitney and Tanner Whitsel of Ledbetter; two sisters: Amanda Beisert and Dora Reuther both of Giddings.

Her husband, T.C., parents, a daughter, Sandra Whitsel, four brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
