Maxine Green

September 21, 1926 – June 19, 2006

Maxine Green, 79, of Highland Haven, Texas died June 19, 2006. She was born Douglas Maxine Wallace on September 21, 1926 in Poteet, Texas to David Douglas and Zelma (Compton) Wallace.

Maxine graduated from high school in 1944 in Rotan, Texas and began her nursing education at City County Hospital, now known as John Peter Smith Hospital, in Fort Worth, Texas. She was also a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps.

She married Walter B. Green in 1946. Together, they had two children, Joe Alan and James David Green.

Throughout her career, Maxine worked as a private practice nurse for 13 years, a school nurse for 13 years and was a public health nurse in Palestine, Texas until her retirement.

Maxine was a proud member of the Eastern Star and Altrusa Club and volunteered in many community and church functions. She was especially fond of her community of friends and neighbors in Highland Haven. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be greatly missed.

Maxine is survived by her sons: Joe, and his wife, Keri, of Lexington, and their children, Rachel, Candace and Walt; David, and his wife, Jackie, of Round Rock, and their daughter, Maylin Nicole. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings.

Services were held at the First Baptist Church of Kingsland, Texas on June 22, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. Reverend Doug Lindley officiated. A graveside service was held at Evergreen Cemetery in Odem, Texas on June 23, 2006.

Sherman Marshall Dodd

December 13, 1923 – June 25, 2006

Sherman Marshall Dodd was born to James R. and Jessie Dodd on December 13, 1923 in the Community of Beat Five near Dime Box, Texas. He graduated from Dime Box High School in 1941 with his primary course of study in Agriculture. Sherman was Captain of his basketball team his senior year. After graduation, he drove a truck for a wholesale grocery company for a few months before being drafted by the US Army on February 17, 1943. He completed three months of basic training at Camp White, Oregon. While there, he completed a 3-week expert lubrication course and obtained a grade of Excellent. While serving in the Army, his Military Occupational Specialty was construction. Sherman served 29 months during World War II as a Combat Engineer Sergeant and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a squad leader and supervised twelve men in repairing roads and bridges as well as building new and temporary roads and bridges along the Danube River. He was also responsible for making estimates of explosives to use in demolition work. Sherman was honorably discharged from the Army on October 23, 1945.

Sherman met his wife to be that same October in 1945. Mary Ann was with her mother at the market when they met for the first time. Later that evening, they had their first date at the picture show. Sherman and Mary dated from that day on. He bought her ring six months before they wed and a new suit for $19.95. Sherman and Mary Ann were married on June 22, 1946 in Tyler, Texas. In the early years of their marriage, Mary and Sherman lived in Tyler. While in Tyler, their first son, Marshall, was born. A couple of years later, they moved to Bryan.

Sherman and Mary only lived in Bryan for a few years and then they moved to Giddings. They lived in Giddings for seven years and during that time, their second son, Michael, was born. In 1954, they moved to Houston in the Spring Branch area where they lived for forty-four years. Their daughter Judy was born in 1955. Sherman worked for Pacific Valve of Houston as a Production Supervisor beginning in September of 1954. The company changed to Mark Controls, Incorporated where he continued to work until his retirement in 1973. While at Pacific Valve and Mark Controls, Sherman made numerous friends while on the job and traveled to San Francisco, New Orleans, and Chicago. Chicago was the favorite of the three although he never really cared for any of those cities.

With all the changes and growth happening in the Houston area, Sherman and Mary decided to get out of the big city. They moved to Lexington on July 18, 1991. Once in Lexington, they became members of the First Baptist Church of Lexington. Both Sherman and Mary Ann were active in the Lexington Senior Citizens group. Sherman served as President of the group. They enjoyed listening to the Country Music Festivals in Giddings and the surrounding area. Their years in Lexington were a blessing as they made many friends whom they both enjoyed dearly.

Sherman loved spending time with his family. Many of the fondest memories he had were at the hunting lease in Nixon, Texas. He and his brothers, sons, nephews, and close friends spent many special times at the lease. Sherman also enjoyed watching all the sporting events that his grandkids participated in. He and Mary were always there for basketball, softball, and volleyball games as well as numerous livestock shows and rodeos.

In June of 2004, Sherman was diagnosed with colon cancer. For two years, he endured numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments. On June 25, 2006, Sherman Marshall Dodd passed away at his home in Lexington. He is survived by his children, Marshall Dodd and Pearl of Brenham, Mike Dodd and Jackie of Lexington, Judy Tilbury of Houston; sister, Duke Wright of Austin; brothers, Don Dodd and Jean of Houston and Dean Dodd and Kay also of Houston; brother-in-law, Jim Pohorelsky and Irene of Giddings; grandchildren, Kristie Terpstra and Paul of New Waverly, Melissa Dodd of Victoria, Stephanie Sullivan and Todd of San Marcos, Kayla Koester and Chris of Lexington, Kadie Dodd of Lexington, Jennifer, Troy, and Cody Oldham of Houston, David Tilbury also of Houston; great granddaughter, Makayla Garretson of Houston and Special Friend, Emegene Rodgers of Lexington.

Sherman Marshall Dodd was the kind of man that all men should strive to be. He was a nice and loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, hard-working employee, loyal and trustworthy friend and devout Christian. He had a way of touching everyone’s life that he came into contact with. All will miss him dearly.

Funeral services were held on June 27, 2006 at Phillips and Luckey Chapel in Giddings.

Katherine Kelley Herbert

January 16, 1913 – June 20, 2006

Katherine Kelley Herbert, 93, of Caldwell, died in the Burleson St. Joseph Health Center in Caldwell on June 20, 2006. Funeral services were held in Corpus Christi at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on June 24, 2006. Burial was in Rose hill Memorial Park in Corpus Christi. Pallbearers were Scott Walker, Emory D. Camp, Kyle McBee, Greg Wright, Payden McBee and Pat Zuberbueler.

Katherine was born in Clarksville, Texas on January 16, 1913 and lived most of her life in Corpus Christi. She moved to Austin in 1960 and later moved to Rockdale in 1980. For the past 6 years, she had lived in Caldwell. Her parents were Harold McDougal and Agnes Hender Kelley. She married Maynard Thomas Herbert in Corpus Christi on October 5, 1935. She worked for 10 years as Resident Supervisor at the University of Texas in Austin. Her husband, Maynard, parents, and three sisters preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughters, Kay Herbert Walker of Raleigh, NC and Connie Herbert and husband, Emory of Rockdale; grandchildren, Kelley McBee and husband Kyle, Scott Walker and wife, Debbie, Kim Wright and husband, Greg, Laura Berry and husband David and Emory E. Camp and wife, Kristin; great grandchildren, Katherine and Payden McBee, Jake and Josie Walker, Jordan and Meridith Wright, Emory E. and Ashley Camp and Grace and Walker Berry.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rockdale and a past member of the St. Patrick’s Alter Guild Society and past president of the PTO in Corpus Christi.

Bertha Augusta (Kasper) Kieschnick

December 6, 1910 – June 24, 2006

Bertha Augusta (Kasper) Kieschnick was born on December 6, 1910 in Lincoln, Texas. She was one of eight children of Ernest and Augusta Koslan Kasper. Rev. R. Osthoff baptized Bertha into the Christian faith on December 18, 1910 at St. John’s Lutheran in Lincoln. She confirmed her baptismal vows at St. John’s Lutheran in Lincoln on April 13, 1924 with Rev. R. Osthoff.

Bertha was united in marriage to Ernest Keischnick on October 27, 1929 at St. John’s Lutheran in Lincoln with Rev. R. Osthoff officiating. This union was blessed with two daughters.

Bertha and Ernest began their married life in the Manheim area. She worked along side her husband on their farm for over 65 years. She always found time to garden, cook, do detailed embroidery, and especially enjoyed making noodles for her family and relatives.

She was a member at Ebenezer Lutheran since 1930 and she was active in the church. She was one of several ladies who helped teach in the parochial school in the early 1930’s. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a charter member of the LWML society of Ebenezer.

In 2000 Bertha moved from the home place to the small house next to Donna and Edgar. She lived there and continued keeping busy with small tasks until 2005. Bertha’s faculties were beginning to fail as the dementia slowly increased. In April of 2005, she became a resident of Country Care Plex and, for the most part, was content to be taken care of by this caring group. The Lord God in His goodness, love and mercy saw fit to take Bertha to Himself in heaven on Saturday, June 24, 2006. She reached the age of 95 years, 6 months and 18 days.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Gloria Wachsmann of Houston and Donna and husband, Edgar Arldt of Manheim; 4 grandchildren, David Wachsmann and wife, Tammy of Houston, Theresa and husband Billy Krause of Serbin, Barbara and husband, Keith Schreckengost of Tacoma, WA, and Steven Arldt of Manheim; 10 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ernest in 1995, her brothers, Richard and Henry and sisters, Louise, Frieda, Emma Adele and Ella; son-in-law Leon Wachsmann and granddaughter Audrey Albrecht.

Mrs. Albert (Hermine) Mutschink

February 15, 1913 – June 19, 2006

Mrs. Hermine Mutschink passed away on June 19, 2006 at the Smithville Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held on June 22, 2006 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. John Davis and Rev. Robert Tiner officiating. Burial followed in the Giddings City Cemetery.

Hermine was born on February 15, 1913 in Giddings to Ernst and Helene (Berger) Unger. She married Albert W. Mutschink on October 21, 1934 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings. She was a housewife and mother. Her parents, great grandson, Joshua Louis Sauceda, half-sister, Ester Faske, half-brother, Charles Kappler, sister, Olga Richter and brother, Fred Unger preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Albert Mutschink of Giddings, son, Alton and Eleanor Mutschink of Austin, 2 daughters, Floris and Anton Fischer and Ruby and Harold Kutschke all of Giddings; 5 grandchildren, Allen Mutschink of Cedar Park, Carol Daley of Austin, Milton and Margie Fischer and Mildred and John Guynes of Giddings, and Nancy and Joe Sauceda of Round Rock; 3 great grandchildren, Rachel Daley of Austin and Stacy and Travis Sauceda of Round Rock; sister, Emilie Faske of Giddings.

Sam L. Thompson

August 8, 1919 -June 23, 2006

Funeral services for Sam L. Thompson, 76, of Dime Box, Texas were held on Sunday, June 25, 2006 at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings with Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the Giddings City Cemetery.

Mr. Thompson died Friday, June 23, 2006 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas.

Sam Thompson was born on August 8, 1929 in Houston, Texas to Sam Salyer & Annie Ross (Teague) Thompson.

He married Betty Ann Daniel on September 11, 1946 at the First Baptist Church in Giddings.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Sam was a retired bulldozer contractor who enjoyed being with his family and helping others in need.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; 2 brothers, Bob Thompson and Johnlo Thompson and a sister, Fay Holton.

Sam is survived by his two daughters; Kathy Moore of Cedar Park and Elaine & Greg Hobbs of Robinson; his son, Joel Thompson of Dime Box; his 6 grandchildren, Barry Moore of College Station, Cody Hobbs of Austin, Eva Moore of Cedar Park, Casey Hobbs of Robinson, Sam Thompson of Sugarland and Alex Thompson of Sugarland; his brother, Glenn Thompson of Lexington; 4 sisters, Mary Baker of Lake Jackson, Frances Thompson of Alvin, Evelyn & Greg Brandenburg of Lake Jackson and Marie & Randy Johnston of Lake Jackson as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Rhett Wilder, Jr.

October 30, 1926 – June 20, 2006

Rhett Wilder, Jr. died on June 20, 2006 at his home in Waco, where he had resided for the past 16 years. Rev. Calvin Springer conducted graveside services on June 23 at the Pleasant Retreat Cemetery near Thorndale.

Rhett was born on October 30, 1926 in Rockdale to Rhett and Bernice (Beard) Wilder. He and Wanda N. Mooring were married on August 26, 1949 in Colorado City, Texas.

He was a retired superintendent from the Oil Exploration industry. His wife, Wanda and his parents preceded him in death.

He is survived by his son Rhett Wilder, III of Waco, and his daughter, Beverly Wilder also of Waco; grandson, Rhett Joseph Wilder and great grandchildren, Adrian and Alyssa Wilder; brother Perry Wilder of Odessa and Pat Wilder of Houston; sisters, Agnes Bennet of Alaska, Nancy Clark of San Antonio and Mary Lund of Midland.

He was a World War II veteran of the US Navy and attended the Methodist Church.
