December 31, 1909 – August 25, 2006 Pete Beran, 96, died on August 25, 2006 at the Central Texas Hospital in Cameron after a short illness. Funeral services were Monday, August 28, 2006 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with Rev. Nita Newman of Pleasant Retreat United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Retreat Cemetery near Thorndale. Pete was born in Travis County on December 31, 1909 to Joe Karl and Tracy (Haag) Beran. He worked for Thorndale and Thrall Cotton Gins. His brothers, Tony, Carl, Bill, Henry, Joe and Emil Beran; sister, Agnes Catchings and his parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his sisters, Sophie Hall of Tyler and Frances Biehle of Thorndale. Serving as pallbearers were Robert McCoy, Jack Shanafelt, Fred Pete Beran, Steven Stolte, William Smith, Kirk Smith, Darrell Towery and Johnny Bielhe. Honorary pallbearers were Carl Beran, Jr. Larry Beran, Bobby Beran, Walter Ray Beran, Willie Ray Beran, Kenneth Biehle, Gary Beran and Ray Biehle. He was a member of Pleasant Retreat United Methodist Church and a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII. He loved to fish and hunt. September 16, 1918 – August 26, 2006 Alice Brooks was born on September 16, 1918 in Thorndale to Hilliard and Bertha Byrum Farmer. She passed away at her home in Lexington on Saturday, August 26, 2006. Funeral services will be at the First Christian Church in Lexington on August 30 at 10:00 am with Dr. Gregory Nichols officiating. Burial will follow in the Lexington Cemetery. She is survived by her sons, Jon and wife, Carolyn of Snook, Richard of Blythe, CA, Victor Beasley and wife Linda of Galena Park and Larry and wife Julia of Brenham; daughter Jeanie Mundine and husband David of McDade; sisters, Allyne Hall and Opal Beard both of Lexington. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and her caregivers, Jennifer Brown of Giddings and Velma Kieffer of Lexington. Alice was a charter member of First Christian Church of Lexington and was a member of CWF Lane Group and served as treasurer of that organization for many years. She was a member of EEA ( Lexington Chapter) and also a member of the Stitch and Gab Club and The Fat Club. She loved to spend time with her family and her friends, of which she had many. She loved to play 42, Canasta, and Yahtzee and especially loved to win. Fishing and travel were also high on her list. She loved to bake and was well known for her home made bread, angel biscuits, and donuts. February 5, 1912 – August 25, 2006 Alma Doss, 94, died on August 25, 2006 in the Rockdale Community Assisted Living in Rockdale. She was a life long resident of Rockdale and Milam County. She was born on February 5, 1912 in the Bushdale Community to John H. and Ida (VonGonten) Timmerman. Funeral services were Sunday, August 27, 2006 in the Peace Lutheran Church in Rockdale with Rev. Jan Campbell of Peace Lutheran Church and Rev. Pete Belew of Rockdale Christian Church officiating. Pallbearers were Scott Randall, Jimmy Keen, Robert Von Gonten, Billy Gest, Rick Hertless, and Jimmy Throckmorton. Alma married Fritz R. Doss on June 20, 1932 in Rockdale. She attended school in Bushdale, Bethlehem and Rockdale. She attended Southwest Texas College in San Marcos, then came home and worked at Rockdale State Bank. She returned to Southwest Texas, commuting until she received her Bachelor’s Degree. She began teaching and again commuted on the weekends and during her summers to earn her Masters Degree in education. She taught school at Bethlehem, Eagle and Rockdale Public schools. After her retirement from the classroom, she taught home bound and GED preparation. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and served as Social Chairman, Program, Recording Secretary, Music Chairman, President, Nominations and World Fellowship. She was President of Texas Federation of Music Club, where she chaired a number of committees. She was a member of the Matinee Music Club in Rockdale since 1963. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Rockdale where she served on Peace Lutheran Church Board, Sunday School Teacher, and the church organist for over 50 years. She provided weekly musical entertainment for two Rockdale Nursing homes and was accompanist for two choirs. She was preceded in death by her husband Fritz, sons, Fredrick, Doss, Jr. and William F. “Bill” Stauffer; brother, Harry Timmerman and sister Annie Mae Hawkins. Alma is survived by her nephew, Timothy Hawkins of Houston and niece, Joy Graham of Rockdale; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. South 37th Street, Temple, TX 76504 June 29, 1918 – August 28, 2006 Funeral services for Miriam York, 88 of Giddings, are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 31, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church in Giddings with Rev. Tony Vinson and Rev. David Davidson officiating. Burial will follow in Giddings Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. Mrs. York passed away Monday morning, August 28, in Giddings. Miriam Cloteel Korff York was born on June 29, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio to Walter and Alva Vida (Black) Korff. She was united in marriage to Meredith Garrett York on April 3, 1947 in Humble, Texas. She taught school in Bellville, Humble, Caldwell and Giddings. Mrs. York enjoyed and took an active role in genealogy, history, restoration and preservation projects. She and her husband’s philanthropy is exhibited through their numerous gifts to educational institutions including the Meredith and Miriam York Field Event Center at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Mrs. York was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in the Capt. Jabez Deming Chapter in Brenham, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas in the Dr. R.F. Brenham Chapter in Brenham, United Daughters of the Confederacy in the Minnie B. Williams Chapter 531 in Brenham, the Austin Colony of the Magna Charta Dames, the John Person Chapter of the Colonial Dames, the German-Texan Heritage Society, the Lee County Historical Commission, the Lee County Historical Society, the Lexington Chapter of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, as well as many other historical and genealogical societies in Texas, South Carolina and Ireland. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Giddings where she enjoyed singing in the choir. Mrs. York was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Meredith; two brothers, Walter and Emmett; and a sister, Dorothy Rohde. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends, as well as the numerous students who have benefited from her teaching and generosity. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Giddings, the Lee County Heritage Society, Hospice Brazos Valley or the charity of one’s choice. |
