Delmus Franks

November 12, 1912 – December 26, 2006

Delmus Franks, 94, of Giddings, died on December 26, 2006. Funeral services were Friday December 29, 2006 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church followed by burial in Giddings Memorial Park.

Delmus was born in Bellville, Texas to Richard and Mathilda Krumrey Frank on November 12, 1912. He and Mildred Krause were married on November 20, 1970. He worked as a machinist in a machine shop and was a veteran of the US Air Force. He was preceded in death by his parents, 7 sisters and 8 brothers.

Surviving him are his wife, Mildred of Giddings, son Wayne Franks and wife Sharon of Longview, daughters: Kathleen Searcy of Rockdale, Barbara and husband Gill Nowlin of Louisiana and Carol and husband Church Ewell of Florida. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bernice Nevelee Putnam

March 17, 1928 – December 31, 2006

Mrs. Bernice Nevelee Putnam passed away at her home in Serbin on December 31, 2006. She was 78 years of age. Rev. Buchhorn of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin officiated at the funeral Service on January 2, 2007. Burial was in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Pall bearers were Austin McClintock, Josh Putnam, Justin Putnam, Paul Putnam, Scott Ellis, and Brian Fleming. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Ricky Stiewart, Rodney Faist, Dale Boeker, Don Boeker, and Herbert Klatte, Jr.

Mrs. Putnam was born on March 17, 1928 in Carmine to Hubert and Ida M. Jahnz Stiewart. She married Edward H. Putnam on March 30, 1947 in Brownwood, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, June Faist.

She is survived by her husband, Edward Putnam of Serbin, Children: Robert and Brenda Putnam of Magnolia, Owen “Douglas” and Barbara Putnam of Houston, Brenda Sue and Ross McClintock of Pearland and Cynthia Ann and Jim Fleming of Austin; stepchildren: John Walter Putnam of San Francisco, CA and Fern Putnam of San Saba; brother, Hubert J. Stiewart of Carmine; sisters: Ruby and Bob Gandy of Temple, Wilma and Peanut Boeker of Brenham and Esther and Herbert Klatte of Brenham. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.

Mrs. Putnam was a faithful wife and loving mother who enjoyed the outdoors, her garden and tending cattle.

Brady Sides

May 6, 1919 – December 29, 2006

Brady Sides, 87, of Rockdale, died on December 28, 2006 at Scott and White Hospital in Temple. Rev. Charles Salmon conducted the funeral service at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Interment was in the Forest Grove Cemetery.

Brady, the son of Marie Mae Sides, was born on May 6, 1919 in the Forest Grove Community. He retired from the US Army and became a security officer for the Woodberry Private School in Virginia. He married Phyllis Becker on June 26, 1979. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Michael Sides.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Rockdale, stepson, Gayton Claymore of Fairfax, VA and stepdaughter, Shirley Marie Claymore-Nelson of Marble Falls. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, his uncle, Marvin Sides of Rockdale and 4 cousins.

Mr. Sides was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and the VFW in Rockdale. Those desiring to make memorials, please do so to the Forest Grove Christian Church or Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library.

Alfred Martin Schulze

May 1, 1931 – December 21, 2006

Alfred Martin Schulze, 75, of Serbin passed away on December 21, 2006 at Country Careplex in Giddings. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Michael Buchhorn at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin on December 23, 2006. Burial was in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Glenn Bigon, Steve Schulz, Michael Schumann, Dennis Pietsch, Daniel Pietsch and James Bigon. Honorary pallbearers were James Steglich, Curtis Kieschnick, Fred Mertink, Oscar Steglich, Jerry Steglich and David Davidson.

Mr. Schulz was born in Serbin on May 1, 1931 to Oscar and Hulda Hohle Schulz. He married Helen Junell Pietsch on November 1, 1954 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warda. He was a Korean War veteran and had served in the US Army from 1952-1954. He was a member of the American Legion Post #276 in Giddings. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, H. Junell Schulz of Serbin, son, David and Carol Schulz and grandson, Christopher Schulz all of Serbin; sister, Eleanor and Eugene Jenke of Lexington, brother, Herbert Schulz of San Antonio and sisters-in-law: Mildred Schulz of Cedar Park, Frances and Walter Schumann of Warda and Helen Pietsch also of Warda.

Mr. Schulz lived in Angleton for a number of years where he was employed by the Texas Highway Department doing marine construction work. After his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Schulz moved back to Serbin where he was engaged in ranching.

William “Bill” Robert Wedgeworth, Jr.
May 24, 1928 – December 26, 2006

William R. Wedgeworth, Jr., 78, of Lexington, died on December 26, 2006 at Oakland Manor Nursing Center in Giddings. Burial was December 27, 2006 in the Giddings City Cemetery.

Bill was born in Brownsboro, Texas on May 24, 1928 to William R. Wedgeworth, Sr. and Leatie Pearl Hollingsworth Wedgeworth. He was a self-employed laborer. He was better known as “Uncle Bill” by his many nieces, nephews and friends. He was a hard worker who loved children. Children always put a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes. Bill’s other love was scratch-off lottery tickets and Bingo. He never hit that big win, but certainly enjoyed trying.

He is survived by his sister, Ruth Johnson of Giddings, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Willie Oneta Matthews and brothers: Truman, Raymond, Mack, Lawrence and Johnny Wedgeworth.

Genevieve (Jeanne) Josephine Karplen Vaughn
June 26, 1944 – December 27, 2006

Mrs. Jeanne Vaughn, 62, passed away on December 27, 2006 at her home near Blue, Texas. Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 2007 in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Lexington, with Father Emillian Fultyn officiating.

She was born in Rome, NY on June 26, 1944 to Joseph Felix and Genevieve Gratlan (Babinski) Karplen. She was Office Manager for American Electric Power and worked in their Legislative Affairs Office. She married Claude W. Vaughn on April 17, 1999 in the Adina Christian Church. Her parents preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Claude, of the Blue Community, sons Christipher Ferriola of Round Rock and Nick “Larry” Ferriola of El Paso; daughter, Diane Castellion of Littleton, CO; brother, Ron Karplen of West Sand Lake, NY; sisters: Dot Karplen of Argyle, NY, Sandra Yellen of Saratoga Springs, NY and Linda Foster of Gransevoort, NY; 5 grandchildren: Aaron, Caleb, Owen, Nate and Caitlyn, who served as honorary pallbearers.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Lexington. Memorials may be made to Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs, Rd., Suite 100, Austin, TX 78759
