Dorothy Havins

January 26, 1939 - December 27, 2007

Dorothy Havins, 67, of Rockdale passed away on December 27, 2006 at Richards Memorial Hospital. A Life Celebration Reception was held on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at the Patterson Civic Center in Rockdale.

Mrs. Havins was born on January 26, 1939 in Stamford, Texas to Jim and Bertha (Lambert) Vasek. Her parents and brother, Bob Vasek preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, John Havins of Rockdale, son, John Havins, Jr. and wife Janice of Houston, daughters: Tonya Copeland and husband Scott of Carrollton and Michelle Boyd and husband David of Atlanta, Georgia, and 7 grandchildren: Whitney, Jake, and Rachel Havins and Andrea, Ben, Aaron and Daniel Boyd.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Elton Richard Jatzlau

October 9, 1928 – January 14, 2007

Elton Jatzlau, 78, of Lincoln died on January 11, 2007 in Austin. Rev. Leif Hasskarl conducted the funeral service on January 14, 2007 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fedor. Burial was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

Mr. Jatzlau was born on October 9, 1928 in Fedor to Ernest and Selma (Lehman) Jatzlau. He was a rancher and farmer. His parents, 5 sisters: Lydia Brade, Laura Dube, Amanda Drosche, Freida Winkler and Lena Jatzlau; 3 brothers: Oscar, Richard and Martin Jatzlau preceded him in death.

He is survived by his sister, Ester Brade of Manheim and multiple nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church or to the charity of one’s choice.

Nelita Lillie Leverna Jacob Neutzler

July 16, 1919 – January 11, 2007

Nelita Neutzler, 87, of Carmine passed away on January 11, 2007 at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange. The funeral was on January 13 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine with Rev. Paul Bohot officiating. Burial was in the Carmine Cemetery.

Mrs. Neutzler was born on July 16, 1919 in Carmine to Otto and Lillie (Jaeger) Jacob. She married Branch C. Neutzler on September 9, 1940. Her husband, parents, mother and father-in-law, sister and brother-in-law: Ora Nell and Henry Lee Fuchs; sister-in-law, Janet Lehmann, Brother-in-law, Kermit Blume and son-in-law, Jerry Schmidt preceded her in death.

She is survived by her children: Branch Neutzler and wife Dolores of Austin, Genell Fay Weigelt and husband Charles Rudy of Austin, LaNell Kay Schmidt of Giddings, Jo Lynn Schoenberg and husband, James of Carmine, 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, brother-in-law, Kenneth Lehmann, sister-in-law, Aileen Blume and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Neutzler enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening. She shared her garden vegetables with friends and neighbors. She worked in the café that she and her husband owned and worked for Jacob’s store for 20 years until she retired on June 11, 1993. The last two years, Nelita lived at Oakland Manor in Giddings.

Dorthy “Dot” Menges

January 22, 1941 – January 12, 2007

Dot Menges, 65, passed away on January 12, 2007 at the Hillcrest Hospital in Waco. Formerly of Rockdale, she had lived in Tanglewood for the past 19 years. Rev. David Garison of Northside Christian Church, Rev. Jeffrey Eernisse of 2nd Christian Church and Rev. Tim Ramsey of Tanglewood Baptist Church conducted the funeral service on January 16, 2007 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial was in the Salty Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Maines, James Wright, James Powell, Brad Pembleton, Ron Runyon and Albert Weller.

Dot was born in Buckholts, Texas on January 22, 1941 to Curtis and Minnie (Tucker) Cardwell. She married Johnny Menges on September 14, 1957 at the old First Christian Church in Rockdale. She was a nurse for many years and worked as Co-Manager of the Tanglewood Christian Camp. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Cory Menges, great granddaughter, Camry Abegglen, parents, Curtis and Minnie Cardwell and stepfather, Tom Beck.

She is survived by her husband, Johnny K. Menges, Sr. of Tanglewood, son, Johnny K. Menges, Jr., of Illinois, daughter, Vanissa McCoy and husband James of Thorndale; grandchildren: Casey Abegglen and husband Matt of Bryan, Stormie Menges, Wyatt Menges and Morgan Menges of Illinois; great grandchildren: Ashlyn and Avery Abegglen; step brother, Dave Beck of Moffat, Texas, sister Martha Morr and husband Craig of Rockdale.

Dot was a member of Tanglewood Baptist Church and a member of the Eastern Star. She organized the Tanglewood Baptist Church Women Salad Supper and helped at the Tanglewood Baptist Church Food Pantry. She enjoyed cooking, and all of the kids that attended camp were her kids.

William (Bill) H. Smith

October 18, 1911 - January 7, 2007

William (Bill) Smith, 95, passed away in California on January 7, 2007. Rev. Reuel Cooper conducted the funeral service at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale on January 13, 2007. Burial was in the Hugh Wilson Cemetery at Tanglewood.

Mr. Smith was born in Mason County, Texas on October 18, 1911 to N.E. and Eva (Kelley) Smith. He worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 34 years. On March 10, 1934, he and Olivian Wright were married in Forest Grove. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Olivian and his son, Don Smith and wife Barbara, all of Pleasanton, California. Three grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive.

He attended Tanglewood Baptist Church, then the Lexington Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and served as a Deacon at both churches. He enjoyed raising cattle and fixing things.

Gail Spates

October 26, 1941 - January 8, 2007

Gail Spates, 65, of Leander, Texas, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2007 at her granddaughter’s home in San Antonio. A memorial service was held on January 12, 2007 in Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Rev. Calvin Springer officiated.

She was born in Pasadena, Texas on October 26, 1941 to Hubert Lee and Myrtie (Bownds) Jackson. She worked as a word processor for a law firm. Her parents and two brothers, Darrell and Lynn Jackson preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, Darren Spates and wife Jamie of Splendora; daughters, Dianne R. Harris of Leander and Myleesa France and husband Sergant Michael France of El Paso; brother, Dewayne Jackson of Lexington; sisters, Kathryn Ann Grisham of Thorndale and Renee Mitchell of Austin. Eight grandchildren also survive.
