Feburary 14,1944 - April 7,2007 Sheriff Joe G. Goodson, a loved and respected citizen of Lee County passed away Saturday, April 7, 2007. His family was blessed to be with him as he peacefully returned home to his Father in Heaven. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and lawman, he left the world a more peaceful place after serving as Sheriff of Lee County for 29 years. “Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God.” Matthew 5:9. Sheriff Joe was born on Valentine’s Day 1944 in Dime Box, Texas to Bertha Cottrell Goodson and former Sheriff of 25 years, Vernon A. Goodson. He was the baby of 5 children. In 1950 his family moved to Giddings where he attended school until his graduation in 1962. In high school, he was a star football player for the Giddings Buffaloes. He made All-District his sophomore year and All-Centex his junior year. After graduation he attended Blinn College. He married Brenda Harmel on February 27, 1966. They were married for 32 years. Brenda passed away December 1, 1998. They were blessed with three children including his son Walt A.Goodson who followed in both his father and grandfather’s footsteps to become a Lt. in the Criminal Intelligence Department of The Texas Department of Public Safety. He is married to Melissa Goodson and they have two children Erin age 6 and Zane age 4. They live in Austin, TX. His daughter Jill worked as an RN after attending UTMB and married John P. Campbell. She is now a homemaker and they have two children, Caroline age 4 and Jack age 2. They live in The Woodlands, TX. His daughter Sarah Jane works as an event planner and is married to Scott Miller. They also live in Austin TX. Sheriff Joe married Robyn Mitschke on July 23, 2000. Robyn brought to this union her children Crystal Gray-Morris, Jason Mitschke, Margie Nunes and Aaron Mitschke, as well as eight grandchildren. Sheriff Joe filled his life with service to the citizens of Lee County and the State of Texas. He started the first Grad-Bash to keep graduating seniors safe. Joe headed the Lee County Blue Santa Program for the last 20 years. He was head of the Lee County Sheriff’s Posse and was instrumental in seeing the Arena to completion. He served as President of the Sheriff’s Association of Texas and was on the membership committee. He was a member of the Auto Theft Task Force, Narcotics Task Force and was the chairman of the Cold Case Review Team. He served on the Giddings Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors from 1994-1997. He was a member of the Industrial Liaison Committee, 1997 Attorney General’s County Advisory Committee and Jail and Bail for March of Dimes. He also received The Peacemaker Award in 2002, YRA Hall of Fame Award in 1994, Giddings Citizen of the Year in 1990 and the Master Peace Officer Award. In his spare time Sheriff Joe loved to be outdoors and always kept a garden, most of which he gave away. And, he had a love for all animals. He was a great cook (especially chili and barbecue) and canned pickles and jelly. He was an active member of The Dime Box Brethren Church where he served as an elder and usher. Joe loved and cherished his family and especially visits from his grandchildren. They would go fishing, gather eggs, and get rides on the “Gator” from Papa. Joe is preceded in death by his parents Bertha and Vernon Goodson, wife Brenda Goodson, and brother, John Goodson. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren as well as a brother Charles Goodson of Giddings, sisters Mary Frances and husband Ben Charles Symmank of Houston and Verna and husband Bill Shaw of San Angelo, sisters-in-law, Betty Goodson of Giddings and Sharon Scott of Burton, brother-in-law Aubrey and wife Evelyn Harmel of College Station, mother-in-law Nellie Harmel of Brenham and mother and father-in-law Betty and Ken Beasley of Ledbetter, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dime Box Brethren Church, Blue Santa, Lehman Animal Shelter of Giddings, and Sheriff’s Association of Texas. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at First Baptist Church in Giddings with burial following in the Giddings City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 from 8:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home, Giddings. The family will be present from 5 to 8 P.M. Tuesday evening. March 22, 1930 - March 30, 2007 Zettler Cude, Sr., 77, died on March 30, 2007 in the Veteran’s Hospital in Temple. He formerly resided in Houston for 62 years and lived the past 15 years in Milano. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mr. Cude was born on March 22, 1930 to T.B. and Alice (Caraway) Cude. He was self-employed as a furniture repairer. He and Margo Pitts were married on June 23, 1977 in Houston. His wife preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Delmon Cude of Milano. He was a life member of the Rockdale VFW, Post #6525. He enlisted in 1948 in the US Army and served in the Philippines during WWII. He was a great father, loving husband and a great friend to many. May 25, 2005 – April 2, 2007 He was born on May 25, 2005 in Georgetown to Bobby Wayne Davis, Sr. and Arlene Rene (Alonzo) Davis. He is survived by his parents Bobby Wayne and Arlene of Thorndale, brother, Bobby Wayne Davis, Jr. of Thorndale; grandparents: Patricia and Robert Alonzo of Sharp and Juanita and James Davis of Panama, Texas; great grandparents: Allsa Garcia of Sharp, Valintine and Euseiba Alonzo of Tahok, TX and Maxine Townsend of Cuero, and a host of aunts, uncles, and other relatives April 7, 1928 - April 3, 2007 Mr. Davidson was born on April 7, 1928 in Hanover, Texas to William (Bill) and Bertha (Hughes) Davidson. He married Elda Faye Gilliland on June 6, 1954 at Milano. He was a life long farmer and rancher. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Fettia Lee Gaston, Billie Weathers and Betty Silvey and brothers: John Davidson and an infant brother. He is survived by his wife, Faye of Rockdale, sons: Henry O. Davidson, Jr., and wife Sheila, Billy Lloyd Davidson and wife Leslie and Ricky Joe Davidson and wife Marlis; daughter Lisa Faye Gerthe and husband Duane all of Rockdale; brothers: Carrol Davidson of Milano and Gail Davidson of Gause; grandchildren: Duane Scott Davidson and Libbie, Dee Anne Wetzel and Josh, Brooksy Lynn Fisher and Colby, Haley Wynn Davidson, Meagan Beth Davidson, Heath Lloyd Davidson, Curtis Joe Davidson, Will Owen Davidson, Reed Oliver Davidson, Alesi Allane Mercedes Gerthe, Ayrton Gunar Daimler Gerthe and Step grandchildren: Kelly Tovar and Kyler Puckett; great grandchildren: Deven and Alexis Davidson, Joshua, Ashlyn and Ayla Wetzel and step great grandson, Tucker Tovar. He was a member of Rockdale Full Gospel Church, veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served as a US Army Sergeant and a member of the Rockdale VFW. He was an avid trail rider and Leader of “Big H Riders”, Charter member of the Rockdale Roping and Cutting Club. He was the first stock producer for the Rockdale Fair & Rodeo. He loved being outdoors with his garden and many animals and he loved to sing Gospel Music. Memorials may be made to the Liberty Cemetery September 16, 1982 – April 4, 2007 Joshua passed away on April 4, 2007 at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. The funeral was on April 9, 2007 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Manheim with burial in the Ebenezer Lutheran Cemetery. Revs. David Hohde, Thomas Hoyt and Leif Hasskarl officiated. He is survived by his parents, Rev. Herb and Barbara Keistman of Manheim, brother Ben of College Station and sister, Elise of Manheim. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and aunt, Celina Keistman. Joshua was a cancer survivor being diagnosed in 1998 and declared cured in 2003. He enjoyed fishing and working on construction projects. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Heritage Foundation Southeast Asia Missions. 1922 - April 1, 2007 He was born in Carmine, Texas to Ewalt and Clara Schroeder Korth. He married Bettie Cox on October 30, 1980. He was a farmer/rancher. His wife, Bettie, his parents and brother, Delton preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter Joyce and James Bower of Arizona, 2 granddaughters: Donna and Mike Langmack of California and Debra and Joe Howard of Nevada; 6 great grandchildren: Courtney, Kirsten and Eric Langmack of California and Robbie and Alisha Howard of Nevada and Julie and Cindy Howard of Nevada, and his sister, Elvira Dallmeyer of Burton. Memorials may be made to Brazos Valley Hospice or to Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine. December 7, 1940 – April 7, 2007 Richard was born on December 7, 1940 in Cameron, MO to William J. and Betty Pendery McClain. He was a carpenter in the construction industry. He is survived by his parents, William and Betty McClain of LaGrange, brothers: Francis and Eve McClain of Venice, FL, and Mark and Leann McClain of LaGrange; sisters: Mary and Bill Castle of Sarasota, FL and Karen McDougall of Venice, FL; nieces and nephews: Ken McDougall, Kandi Ross, Kelli and Ron Peyton, Christina and Steve Reitz and Rebecca McClain. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, 1 nephew and a brother-in-law. Memorials may be made to St. Michael’s Lutheran Cemetery Fund. March 3, 1927 – April 7, 2007 Mrs. Winkler was born in Winchester on March 3, 1927 to Carl and Wilhemina Symank Miertschin. She married Charles Winkler on June 18, 1947. She worked in the healthcare industry as a LVN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, parents, daughter, Diane Winkler, brother, William Miertschin and sister-in-law, Carolyn Miertschin. She is survived by her son, Ralph and Gail Winkler; grandson, Justin Winkler and granddaughter, Caitlyn Winkler all of Houston; brothers: Monroe Miertschin of Giddings and John and Emma Miertschin of Alabama; sister, Violet and Tom Tarpey of Katy and sister-in-law Carol Miertschin of Pearland. Memorials may be made to St. Michael’s Lutheran Church or Alzheimer’s Association. July 23, 1943 – April 2, 2007 She was born in Griffin Chapel, Texas on July 23, 1943 to Robert and Gaynell (Moore) Melton. She worked as a bus driver then later as an instructional aid for Milano ISD. She retired May 25, 1999 after 31 years. Her father, son, Henry Allen Townsend and brother, Roland Young preceded her in death. She is survived by her mother Gaynell Melton of Milano, sister, Margaret Young of Austin, aunts uncles and a host of cousins and other relatives and friends. Della Mae was a member of Griffin Chapel A.M.E. Church in Griffin Chapel. She attended school in Milano, then attended and graduated from Aycock High School in Rockdale. |
