Simon Aldama, Sr.
October 28, 1921 – June 7, 2007
26, 1921 - May 24, 2007

Simon Aldama, Sr., 85, died on June 7, 2007 at his home in Rockdale, where he had lived his entire life. Funeral services were conducted by Father Gregory Hanks at St. Joseph Catholic Church on June 11, 2007. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale. Pallbearers were Antonio DeLeon, Humberto R. DeLeon, Dominic Aldama, Joseph Mariarossi, John DeLeon and Jessie DeLeon, Jr.

Mr. Aldama was born in Rockdale on October 28, 1921 to Prudencio and Epifania (Zapata) Aldama. He worked for many years as a laborer for H.H. Coffield and for the City of Rockdale. He married Elisa Castillo on September 17, 1964 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockdale. His son, Simon John Aldama, Jr. and his parents preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Elisa Aldama, daughter, Lucy Aldama Lianas, both of Rockdale; brothers: Marcelino Aldama and wife Reyes of Rockdale and Manuel Aldama and wife Sally of Rockdale; sisters: Tommie Santos of Killeen, Ophelia De La Rosa and husband Louis of Temple and Alice Gomez and husband Oscar of Killeen. Ten grandchildren and one great granddaughter also survive.

Mr. Aldama served in the US Army during WWII and was honorably discharged as Technician Fifth Grade. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rockdale. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 548, Rockdale, TX 76567.

Mildred Joyce Minnick Belvin

May 21, 1935 - June 4, 2007

Mildred Joyce Belvin, 72, of Tracy, Texas, passed away on June 4, 2007 in the Georgetown Hospital after a brief battle with cancer. The funeral service was held at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale followed by burial in the Sharp Cemetery. Rev. Frank Simcik of Buckholts Evangelical Brethren Church in Buckholts officiated. Serving as pallbearers were Monty Hammack, Blake Graham, Brent Stutts, Carl Bradley, Stephen Swartz and Devin Lane. Honorary pallbearers were Larry McEntire and Bill Hammack.

She was born in Austin on May 21, 1935 to Jack and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Minnick. She and Robert Carl Belvin were married on March 15, 1957 in the First Baptist Church in Leander. Her parents preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Bobby Belvin of Tracy; daughters: Connie Hammack and husband Billy of Rockdale and Cyndy Graham and husband George of Flower Mound; brothers: Bobby Minnick of Hewitt and Tommy Minnick and wife Cyndy of Cedar Park; grandchildren: Monty Hammack and wife Kristi of Panama City, FL, Ashley Stutts and husband Brent of Rockdale and Blake Graham of Flower Mound; great grandchildren: Oyn, Shelby and Chesnee Hammack of Panama City, FL and Jaylyn, Coy and Jordyn Stutts of Rockdale.

An active member of the Buckholts Evangelical Brethren Church, she enjoyed playing piano, scrapbooking and cooking. Her greatest accomplishment was her family.

John W. Baylor

April 3, 1921 – June 6, 2007
John Baylor, 86, died on June 6, 2007 at his home in Tanglewood. Formerly of Rockport, he had lived in Tanglewood for the past 24 years. Graveside services were held on June 12, 2007 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, with Rev. Joe Watts officiating.

Mr. Baylor was born in San Antonio on April 3, 1921 to Henry Templeton and Mary (Shields) Baylor. He worked as a loan officer in San Antonio Bank for 10 years. He moved to Houston as a route drive for Carnation Milk, and worked at the Aransas Pass Post Office for 15 years. He and Yvonne C. Nelson were married in January 1946. She preceded him in death in 1995. Also predeceasing him were his son, Christopher Baylor; parents, brother,Walker Baylor, sister, Courtney Hardman and grandchild, Mark Lischer.

His survivors include his sons: John R. Baylor of The Woodlands, Timothy Allen Baylor of Rockport, and Michael W. Baylor of Lexington; daughter, Carol Luley of Temple; brothers: Hal T. Baylor of San Antonio and Robert E. Baylor of Huntsville. 19 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren survive him also.

He was a US Army veteran of WWII and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Faye Delle Hargrove-Burgess

December 21, 1910 - June 4, 2007
Faye Dell Hargrove-Burgess, 96, of Sharp passed away on June 4, 2007 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. Minister Bill Whaley of Murray St. Church of Christ in Rockdale conducted the funeral service on June 8, 2007 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial was in the Sandy Creek Cemetery near Rockdale. Serving as pallbearers were Clyde Hargrove, Jr., Larry Smith, Jason Jenkins, Jake Jenkins, Walter Wentzel and Cole Yoakum.

Mrs. Hargrove-Burgess was born in Milam County near Milano on December 21, 1910. For 25 years, she was Head of the Water Department for the City of Rockdale. She married Alonzo Lilburn Hargrove on November 27, 1935 in Waco. He preceded her in death in 1956. She and her second husband, Woodrow Burgess, Sr., were married in April, 1982 in Edinburg, Texas. He passed away in 2003. Her parents, brothers: Giles R. and John D. Yoakum and sisters: Ivy Darden, Flossie Beathard, Georgia Diver, Allie Bell Butler and Fannie Stevenson also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, Clyde Hargrove and wife Barbara of Sharp; daughter, Dorothy Jenkins and husband Dan of Rockdale; sisters: Kate Broderson of LaMarque and Charlotte Wentzel of Santa Fe, Texas; grandchildren: Clyde Hargrove, Jr., Tammy Smith, Jason Jenkins, and Jake Jenkins; great grandchildren: Zachary, Samuel, Eli, Maggie, and Ella Jenkins and Miranda Smith.

She was a member of Murray Street Church of Christ since 1953, and was the oldest living member of the church. She was baptized at age 16 at Sandy Creek Church of Christ. She loved to garden and can vegetables.

Marie Guthrie

September 23, 1915 - June 3, 2007
Marie Guthrie, 91, passed away on June 3, 2007 in the Manor Oaks Nursing Home in Rockdale. She was a lifelong resident of Milam County, mostly in San Gabriel. Graveside services were conducted by Mr. Charles Denman on June 7, 2007 in the Locklin Cemetery near San Gabriel.

Mrs. Guthrie was born on September 23, 1915 in Milam County to Thomas Zack and Viola Margaret (Scarbrough) Yoakum. She was a clerk for Forbes Dry Goods in Thorndale. On March 12, 1935, she and James F. “Buster” Guthrie were married in San Gabriel. Her husband, parents, brother, Johnny Yoakum and sisters: Ernestine Williams, Christine Hubert and Vivian Touchstone preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, Jimmy Guthrie and wife Sarah of Sharp; daughter, Jan Ellis and husband Jim of Rockdale; grandchildren: Sharon Guthrie of Cedar Park, Dawn Lovelace and husband Shey of Brownsville, TN, Lori Jones and husband Mikel of Bryan and Jay Ellis of Rockdale; great grandchildren: Chelsey Heine, Jacob Lovelace, Taylor Ethan and Austin Jones, and a great great grandchild, Kaelyn Heil.

She was a member of San Gabriel Christian Church where she was very active as song leader and Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Town and Country Club in Thorndale.

Brenda Jean Hoffman

September 9, 1953 – June 5, 2007
Brenda Jean Hoffman, 53, of Rockdale, passed away on June 5, 2007 at Kings Daughters Hospital in Temple. Graveside services were held on June 9, 2007 in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville.

Mrs. Hoffman was born on September 9, 1953 in Pasadena, Texas. She and Harold Hoffman were married on January 5, 1989. Formerly of the Houston area, she had lived in Rockdale since 1983. She had worked as a nurse since 1995.

She is survived by her husband, Harold of Rockdale; sons: Stacy Drew Buchanan and wife Amy Elizabeth of Locust Grove, VA, Robert “Bobby” Buchanan and wife Leann Sue of Rockdale, Zachariah Lee Gallop and wife Brandy Michelle of Rockdale, Jeremiah Stephen Gallop and wife Amanda Marie of Rockdale and Jared L. Hoffman of College Station; daughters: Nicole Coorough and husband Aaron of Los Molinas, CA and Maria Jean Thompson of Rockdale; mother, Lois Jean Tremaine McCown and husband Bill of Rockdale; aunt: Mozelle Hancock of Rockdale; grandchildren: Abigail Ruth, Joseph Daniel and Michael Paul Buchanan and Ethan Lee Clemons all of Locust Grove, VA, David Michael Davis, Kennon Cross Lucas, Landon Kade Phillips, Brandy Ulani-Jade, Zachariah Dale Gallop, Jeremiah Austin Gallop, Sabrina Yvonne Jean Thompson and Guiliana Grace Ohde all of Rockdale, Alexander Joseph and Kloe Jenine Coorough of Los Molinas, CA.

She enjoyed camping and fishing.

Jay Harold Jervis

September 2, 1941 - June 5, 2007
Jay Jervis, 65, of Ledbetter, passed away on June 5, 2007 at the Heart Hospital of Austin. Rev. Tim Edwards conducted the funeral service at the Ledbetter Cemetery on June 12, 2007.

Jay was born in Marion, Indiana on September 2, 1941. His parents, who preceded him in death, were John Harold and Delores Maxine (Jolieff) Jervis. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jon Max Jervis and fraternal twin sister, Ora Kay Jervis.

He attended school in Harlingen, was a state officer in the Texas Christian Endeavor and graduated from Harlingen High School in 1959. He was a former member of the First Christian Church in Harlingen. He worked his way through school as a pressman with the Harlingen Valley Morning Star and worked in the family’s paint contracting business.

Jay was an educator for 28 years and taught in schools in Bishop, San Benito, Harlingen, La Grange and Giddings. He was also the former manager for the Valley Christian Encampment in Olmito.

He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Giddings and was vice president of the Ledbetter Cemetery Association, a member of the Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Dept., a life member of the Texas A&M@ Kingsville Alumni Association, a board member of the Ledbetter Water Supply Corporation and a member of the board of directors of the Carmine State Bank in Carmine. He was also a Board Member of the Fayette County Fair and a member of the Lions Club in Carmine. He was a life member of the Texas Classroom Teachers Association, a life member of the Texas State Teachers Association and also a life member of the National Education Association.

Jay and his family owned and operated Monzi’s in Giddings, the Stuermer Ranch, the Stuermer Store, the Trail of Lights and the Ledbetter B & B, all in Ledbetter.

He will be remembered for his humanitarian nature and his tireless efforts to make the community he lived in a better place for everyone to enjoy.

Charles Allen “Pete” Lehman

January 9, 1933 - June 5, 2007
Charles Allen “Pete” Lehman, 74, of Houston, died on June 5, 2007 at the VA Hospital in Houston following a long illness. The funeral service was held on June 8, 2007 at the Elk’s Lodge #151 in Stafford, Texas. A graveside service was held later that day at Salty Cemetery near Thorndale.

Pete was born in Thorndale on January 9, 1935. He retired after 45 years as a self-employed remodeling contractor in and around the Houston area.

He is survived by his wife, Martha of Houston; sons: Steve Lehman and wife Karen of Thorndale, Jack “John” Lehman and wife Margie of Houston and Joel Lehman and wife Ginger of Nashville, TN; daughter, Sue Lyle and husband Rodger of Houston; grandchildren: Erin Ballard, Jenny Lehman, Jake Lehman and Cash Lehman and great granddaughter, Alyssa Adame.

Pete was a lifetime member of BPOE Elks Lodge #151 since 1976, holding the title of Past Exalted Ruler, Past Elk’s Chairman of the VA, volunteering services to the Veterans Hospital for 30 years. He held the offices of Ritual Chairman and Coach, winning awards in State competitions.

Emma “Babe” Ovcarik

October 2, 1913 – June 7, 2007
Emma Ovcarik, 93, of Dime Box, passed away on June 7 2007 at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin. Rev. Lee Eschberger conducted the funeral service at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings on June 11, 2007. Burial was in the Giddings City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Mike Campbell, Charles Fritsche, Ricky Herzog, Marcus Lara, Daniel Field and Mark Locke.

Mrs. Ovcarik was born in Paige, Texas on October 2, 1913 to Willie August and Emma Helena Urban Schmidt. She married Alexander L. Ovcarik on October 25, 1933. She owned and operated the Ovcarik café in Dime Box for many years. She also worked at the SPJST Hall in Dime Box.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Betty Ovcarik of Bastrop, grandson, James Ovcarik of Dallas; 3 great grandchildren: Austin, Alyssa, and Alex Ovcarik of Dallas; two special nieces: Donna Field of Giddings and Evelyn Herzog of Paige. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander, parents, son, James and 2 brothers: John Henry and Willie Schmidt.

Mrs. Ovcarik enjoyed gardening and her cats. Those desiring may make memorials in Mrs. Ovcarik’s name to St. David’s Medical Center in Austin or the Ronald McDonald House in Austin.

Robin Phillips

December 22, 1958 - June 3, 2007
Robin Phillips, 48, passed away on June 3, 2007 at her home in Thorndale. A graveside service was held at Pleasant Retreat Cemetery south of Thorndale on June 8, 2007.

Robin was born in White Pine, Tennessee on December 22, 1958 to Robert L. and Jeane Roberts. She worked as a truck driver for 18 years, retired and was a homemaker for the past 9 years. She and Kenneth E. Phillips were married on April 7, 1997 in Giddings.

Her husband, Kenneth of Thorndale survives her. She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Kendra Phillips of Thorndale and one brother. Her parents preceded her in death.
