October 17, 1928 – August 13, 2007 Joy Beard died on August 13, 2007 in the John’s Community Hospital in Taylor. The funeral was held at 10 a.m. on August 17, 2007 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. The Burial followed in Pleasant Retreat Cemetery near Thorndale, Texas. The public visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 16, 2007 at the funeral home. Clint Beard, Chase Delacerda, John Delacerda, Jason Stewart, Michael Griffith and Joshua Beard served as Pall Bearers. Joy was born on October 17, 1928 in Lowell, Mass. to Fred and Edna M. Bestany. Just before her 18th birthday, Joy married T.A. Beard in Chelsea, Mass. on October 13, 1946. Joy was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a member of the Pleasant Retreat United Methodist Church near Thorndale and actively participated in church and enjoyed “Walk to Amaeus” She was also a member of Town and Country Club in Thorndale. Joy is survived by her husband, T.A. Beard, of Thorndale; sons John F. Beard and wife Elizabeth of Dallas, Thomas R. Beard of Thorndale; daughters Elaine J. Alexander and husband Kenny of Thorndale; sister Gertrude “Trudy” Melvin and husband Shorty of Houston; and 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Joy was preceded in death by her parents. November 7, 1930 – August 18, 2007 Bette Jane Burgess died on Aug. 18, 2007 at Manor Oaks Nursing Center in Rockdale. Bette was born on November 7, 1930 in Brownwood, Texas to John Henry Burgess and Nettye Ramil. She lived in Rockdale for 57 years. Bette is survived by her brother, J.C. Burgess of Nederland, Texas; her sister Billie Turner of Mineral Wells, Texas and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, J.E. Burgess, and her sister, Nora Anderson. February 3, 1918 - August 16, 2007 The funeral was held on August 18, 2007 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings. Burial was in Giddings City Cemetery. Pall Bearers were: Curtis Fischer, Bill Koslan, David Little, Herbert Faske, Jr., Matthew Grimm and Donald Schroeder. The members of VFW Post 4475 were honorary Pall Bearers. The family requests memorials be sent to the Brazos Valley Hospice or the charity of one’s choice. Joe worked as a farmer and rancher and served in the U.S. Army during WWII where he obtained the rank of TFC 5. He was also a member of the Giddings VFW Post 4475. Joe is survived by his wife, Elsie Fischer, of Giddings; his son, Harvey Fischer and wife Janice, of Giddings; his granddaughter, Tiffany Johnson and husband Jordan, of Waco; his grandson, Braden Fisher, of Juneau, Alaska; three sisters: Effie Matejek, of Houston, Dahua Koslan, of Giddings, Gertrude Faske, of Brenham; brother, Noah Fischer and wife Alice, of Giddings; brothers-in-law: Bill Schroeder and wife Adeline, of Giddings, Louis Lehmann of Warda; sister-in-law, Joyce Schroeder, of Giddings and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Anthony Fischer, sister-in-law, Louise Fischer; brother-in-law: Emil Matejek, Bill Koslan, Herbert Faske; in-laws: Alvin Schroeder, Ewalt and wife Ella Schroeder, Alma and husband Ewalk Albrecht, Herbert Schroeder, Amanda Lehmann and Arnold and Evelyn Schroeder. October 7, 1936 – August 16, 2007 A life-long resident of Rockdale, Alfred was born on Oct. 7, 1936 to Anastacio and Guadalupe (Reyes) Garza. A member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rockdale, Alfred married Earlene Morton, served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959 and worked as a truck driver. Alfred is survived by his wife, Earlene Morton of Rockdale, sons: John Garza of Rockdale, Gilbert Garza of Austin, Greg Garza of Maryville, Tennessee and Leonard Garza of San Antonio; his daughter, Rita Garza of White Plains, New York; brothers: Juan Garza of San Antonio, Cruz Garza, Arthur Garza and Ruben Garza of Rockdale, Jimmy Garza of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, Joe Garza of Austin; his sisters: Cecelia Garza of San Antonio, Angie Grafe of Evergreen, Colorado, Isabel Ortiz of Houston; Mary Helen Ortega of Rockdale and Josephine Garza of Austin; five grandchildren, and the children’s mother, Matilde Garza of Rockdale. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Robert and Manuel Garza. March 2, 1914 – August 14, 2007 Genevia was born to Jim Graham and Pernie Owen Graham on March 2, 1914 in Holdenville, Oklahoma. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richmond, California and worked as a Licensed Vocational Nurse for 42 years. She lived in Mountain Home, Idaho and moved to Rockdale 12 years ago. Genevia is survived by her brother, Jake Graham of Clovis, New Mexico; her sisters: Vernie Harris of Rockdale and Geraldine Gillis of Rockdale and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers: T.C., Fred, Leonard, Owen, Donald and Loyd Graham; and two sisters: Ruby Chitwood and Rose Lee Canady. September 4, 1920 – August 19, 2007 Ed was born in Paige, Texas to August and Anna Orts on Sept. 4, 1920. He married Bertha Nowotnik on July 18, 1942 in Manheim, Texas. Ed was a general contractor who owned and operated E.A. Orts Builders for many years. He was involved with the Paige Community Center and enjoyed ranching. Ed was a veteran of WWII and served in the U.S. Army, having obtained the rank of Captain. Ed is survived by his children: Virginia and Larry Loewen, Cindy and Bob Hagan, and Douglas and Sharon Orts all of Houston; his grandchildren: Dana and Matt Williams of Tomball, Texas, Steven Loewen of Houston, Shawna and Jerry Ford of Cedar Creek, Texas, Dennis and Terri Orts of Houston, Jennifer Hagan of Houston and Kimberly Hagan of Houston; great-grandchildren: Samantha Orts of Houston, Jared and Madelyn Williams of Tomball, Jake and Julie Ford of Cedar Creek; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bertha Orts and his brothers: Bill, Earl and Alfred Orts. May 8, 1936 – August 17, 2007 Harley Pat Wilder died on Aug. 17, 2007 at the Westwood Rehab Healthcare in Houston. The public visitation was held Aug. 20 at the Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. The graveside service was performed by Rev. Nita Newman on Aug. 21, 2007 at Pleasant Retreat Cemetery near Thorndale, Texas. Harley was born on May 8, 1936 to Rhett Wilder and Bernice Beard in Rockdale. He graduated from Kermit High School in 1955, attended Texas Tech University, married Helen Harrison on May 29, 1957 in Kermit, Texas and lived in Houston for 35 years. Harley began his 38-year career at Texaco as a dodlebugger and finished as a seismic data format exchange analyst, retiring in 1994. Harley is survived by his wife, Helen Wilder of Houston; his son, Tony Wilder of Houston; his daughter, Misty Yarnbeau and husband, Glen of Pearland, Texas; brother, Perry Wilder of Odessa, Texas; sisters: Agnes Bennett of Haines, Alaska, Nancy Clark of Pearsall, Texas and Mary Lund of Midland, Texas; and seven grandchildren: Brenna, Brittany, Shannon, Sharra and Trevor Wilder and Christopher and Alexia Yarneau. Harley was preceded in death by his parents and brother Rhett Wilder, Jr. |
