Oct. 13, 1919 – Aug. 23, 2007 Mable “Bobbie” Hanson Anthia died on Aug 23, 2007 at the Port Lavaca Nursing and Rehab Center. The graveside services were held on Monday at the Liberty Cemetery near Milano. Bobbie was born on October 13, 1919 in Minnesota and lived in Palacios , Texas for 57 years. Bobbie is remembered as the manager of the MooMoo Milk Store in the 1960’s and her work in the high school cafeteria in the 1970’s. She was a seamstress, upholsterer, and wood furniture restorer for many years. She was also a part-time innkeeper at Luther Hotel in the 1990’s. Anyone wishing to pay tribute is asked to make an unrestricted donation to the Palacios Area Fund, 457 Commerce, Palacios, TX 77465. Bobbie is survived by her sons: Roger Smith and wife Charlotte of LaCresenta, California; Jodie Anthis and wife Nancy of Huntsville, Texas; Leon Anthis of Palacios; daughter, Roberta Ripke of Palacios; ten grandchildren and 8 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Horton Anthis, Jr.; her parents; her infant daughter, Jeanie Belle Anthis and by her son-in-law, Clarence G. Ripka, Jr. August 1, 2007 – August 20, 2007 Elizabeth “Lizzy” Renae Cowan was born on Aug. 1, 2007 and passed away on Aug. 20, 2007. The funeral was held on Aug 23 at the Ridgeway Baptist church and burial was at the Ridgeway Cemetery in Paige, Texas. The family requests memorials be sent to Ronald McDonald House or St. David’s neo-natal unit in Austin, Texas. Lizzy is survived by her parents: Bobbie Barnett of Giddings, Johnny and Pam Cowan of Smithville; her twin sister, Liliana Janae Cowan of Smithville; her three older sisters: Toni and Quinton Allen of Lockhart, Randi Cowan of Smithville, Terry Cowan of Smithville; her brother, Caleb Cowan of Smithville; her grandparents: Leeland and Eloda Light of Conroe, Kenneth and Marjorie Cowan of Paige, Martha Barnett of Giddings, Tony and Ollie Brabant of Georgetown and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Jim Barnett. October3, 1924- August 18, 2007 He was born in Estherville, Iowa on the 3rd of October 1924, the son of the late Esther Butler Rhodes and Edwin James Rhodes. He was a lifelong resident of Houston, except for ten winters north during the height of his business career. A graduate of Lamar High School, he held a BSME from Rice and Villanova Universities, and an MBA from the University of Houston. From 1943 to 1946, Allen Rhodes was a lieutenant in the US Navy, serving as a torpedo bomber pilot aboard the aircraft carrier CVE Vella Gulf in the North Pacific. He began his career in 1947 with Hughes Tool Company as Assistant to the Director of Engineering. He later joined McEvoy Company serving as Director of Engineering, Vice President of Engineering & Manufacturing, and was President at the time of its merger with Rockwell Manufacturing Company in 1963. Joining Rockwell as General Manager of the Houston plant, he then moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 1964 to assume the position of Vice President of Research & Engineering. There he organized Rockwell’s first central research laboratory. Later he became Vice President of Corporate Planning & Development for ACF Industries, Inc. in New York City, and returned to Houston in 1974 to accept the position as President and CEO of McEvoy Oilfield Equipment Company, a newly formed division of Rockwell International. After retiring in 1979, he joined Warren Oilfield Services Company as President and Executive Vice President of Goldrus Marine Drilling Company, both divisions of the Warren-King Companies. During 1983-86, he carried out a Chapter 11 reorganization for Anglo Energy (now Nabors Drilling) in New York, followed by serving as President and CEO of Gripper, Inc. and later as CFO of Hydrotech Systems. After retiring a second time, he joined Silver Fox Advisors as a mentor to small businesses and entrepreneurs, and later as adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Houston. He was a current trustee of Southwest Research Institute and a member of the board of the Houston Humane Society, as well as a former member of the board of directors of Triten Corporation, Keystone International, Rawson-Koenig, Inc., Dime Box Historical Society, & the George Lehmann Animal Shelter. Allen Rhodes held twenty-two U.S. patents in oil and gas production equipment and was the author of numerous technical publications. He was best known nationally for his service to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as its 89th president, the youngest person to hold this office at the time of his election. He also served as vice president of its Policy Board, Industry Department, Standing Committee on Transportation, and Chairman of the Petroleum Division and the South Texas Section. He was an appointed public member & chairman of the Department of Transportation Gas Pipeline Safety Standards Committee in Washington, and served as chairman of the ASME Committee on Safety & Pollution Prevention Equipment used in offshore oil & gas operations. He was a past chairman of the Committee on Finance, a member of the B16 Committee on Standardization of Valves, and chairman of the ASME Foundation. Allen Rhodes was an honorary member of ASME International, a fellow in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (Gr. Britain), member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME, American Management Association, National Academy of Engineers, and Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society. He served as vice president and director of the American National Standards Institute, director & president of the Engineers’ Council of Houston, and president of the Houston Engineering & Scientific Society. He was elected by a peer committee to the National Academy of Engineering, and holds the Robert Henry Thurston Award from ASME, the Howard Coonley Medal from the American National Standards Institute, and the Richards Memorial Award from Pi Tau Sigma and American National Standards Institute. He was presented the first OilDrop award, which now carries the name of the Rhodes OilDrop award, and is given annually for outstanding service to the Petroleum Division of ASME. He was also awarded the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award by Villanova University. Allen was an avid sailor, participating for many years in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit. He won his first medal in sailing competition at age nine. His lifelong interest in sailing can be attested to by an extensive collection of books on the subject. He was a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, River Oaks Country Club, Rotary International, The Breakfast Association, Nomads, The Lamar 41ers, and Sons of American Revolution. Allen Rhodes was highly regarded by all of his professional associates and friends as a man of integrity, honesty, and fairness. A man for all seasons, he was as at home at the White House as he was working cattle at his beloved Rancho Nueces in Dime Box, TX. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol J. (Haisler) Rhodes; sons, Stephen Haisler Rhodes and wife Yvonne of Houston and James Fleming Rhodes and wife Sheryl of Austin; adopted daughter, Pury Vergara Reyes and husband, Santos, Jr. of Houston; granddaughter, Susan Sheryl Rhodes of Austin; grandson, Robert Allen Rhodes of Austin; and adopted grandsons, Ernesto David Reyes and Alex Antonio Reyes of Houston. He is also survived by his brother, Edwin James Rhodes and wife, Dr. E. C. Henley of Athens, Georgia; sister-in-law Kathy Haisler Radde and husband Kenneth of Meridan, Texas; nephews, Karl Radde and wife Melissa of North Zulch, Texas and Clayton Rhodes and wife Annie of Mansfield, Ohio; nieces, Elizabeth (Rhodes) Eck and husband David of Marietta, Georgia and Anna Radde of Meridian, Texas; and cousins Ida Jo (Butler) Moran and husband Tom of Brenham, Texas, Maxine (Butler) Cochran and husband Donald of Houston, and Anne (Butler) Leonard of Roaring Gap, North Carolina. Friends were cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening on Monday, the 20th of August, at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. The memorial service was conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 21st of August, at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay Drive in Houston, where Dr. Jim Jackson served as the officiant. Immediately following the service, all were invited to join the family for a reception at an adjacent venue of the church. Honored to serve as casket-bearers at the interment included John Beson, Bill Brannan, Donald Cochran, Edward DeJon, Robert Funk, John Fowler, Tom Gillis, George Grainger, William B. Hightower, Larry Kelly, Dr. David Shell, Keith Thayer, Christopher Williams, and Carl Wilson. Honorary pallbearers included Perry Argyris, William E. Carl, Dr. Winston Lee, Crawford Mills, Frank G.
