July 28, 1935 - October 9, 2007 Services for Helen “Kitty” Ruth Gerlach were held on October 12, 2007 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church. Burial was in Giddings City Cemetery. The Reverend Ed Schwanke presided. Memorials may be made to the Martin Luther Lutheran Church or to Christopher House, Austin. Kitty, 72, died on October 9, 2007 at Christopher House in Austin. She was born in Jim Wells County, Texas on July 28, 1935. Her parents were Charles and Mary (Young) Shade. She married Gilbert R. Gerlach Sr. on April 19, 1969. Kitty is survived by her children: Ava Williams of Giddings, Annie and Edmund Beltran of Giddings, Richard and Peggy Gerlach of Giddings, Joseph and Andrea Kapel of Pearland, Texas, Gilbert R. Jr. and Suzy Gerlach of Jacksonville, Florida; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters: Linnie and J.C. Toll of Cedar Park, Betty Crosson of Portage, Pennsylvania, Mary and George Nagle of Portage, Pennsylvania, Susan and Salvador Battaglia of Houston; brother-in-law, Clarence Gerlach of Giddings and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brothers, Charles J. Shade and Kenneth Shade. March 21, 1917 - October 8, 2007 Alice Marie Hornung passed away in the early morning hours on October 8, 2007, in Pepper’s Personal Care Home in Kerrville, Texas. There she received excellent care with love and affection from Pepper and her husband, Joe, and most recently the staff of Sid Peterson Hospice during the last year and a half of her life. Alice Marie Hillegeist was born in Lexington, Texas, on March 21, 1917, to Eddie Hillegeist and Alice Augusta Grusendorf Hillegeist. She married Ernest Hornung, of Gonzales August 1963 who preceded her in death in July, 1992. She is also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Loreen Perry and Clara Lee Brewer and nephew, William Perry. Marie graduated as valedictorian from Lexington High School in 1934. Her college education began at Blinn College. She then transferred to Southwest Texas State University, where she earned a BA in Education. She taught in the Texas schools for 45 years at the junior and senior high levels. She served as president of Lee County Texas State Teachers’ Association, counselor for college youth working with Methodist churches of Texas and PTA president. Later in her career, she earned an MA in education at The University of Texas at Austin. In 1963, she organized the Special Education Program in Gonazles Independent School District of which she served also as department head. Her longest terms of tenure were 19 years in Lexington and 18 years in Gonzales where she retired. She was a member of The National Education Association, The Texas Education Association and Texas Retired Teachers. She was a very dedicated teacher whose students long remember her with affection and thankfulness. When she felt she could no longer care for herself, she gave up her home and moved to The Romberg House, an assisted living care facility in Gonzales. When in 2004, she needed more than long distance care by her son and daughter-in-law, she moved to Kerrville, first to Alpine Nursing Home and then to Pepper’s Personal Care Home. While at Pepper’s, she celebrated her 90th birthday with “a birthday bash”, as she called it. Many former students as well as family and friends paid tribute to her by coming long distances to participate in the festivities. Alice Marie was a faithful and dedicated member of the United Methodist Church all of her life. She served diligently and lovingly in many capacities. She was a member of United Methodist Women, was a choir director, adult Sunday School teacher, and served on various church boards. She loved her Lord Jesus and is now in his beloved presence. She is survived by her son, Dr. Warren Hornung and wife, Anita of Kerrville; grandson Billy Hornung and wife Keri of Gonzales; grandson John Hornung and Patricia Hornung, great grandchildren, Laura Hornung and David Hornung of Mission, TX; a niece, Jan Alexander, of Lexington, TX.; great nieces, Crystal Alexander, Kansas State University, and Emily Alexander of Round Rock, TX.; nephew, Robert Brewer and wife, great nieces, Bliss Marie, Gem, and great nephew, Rayce of Lexington. His parents were Marvin Edmund Mitschke, Sr. and Louise (Zoch) Mitschke. Mike worked as a machinist in Houston for 20 years and at Kaemark Salon Furniture in Giddings for 15 years. He served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam from 1964 to 1966. Mike enjoyed fixing things, especially motors, but he especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Mike is survived by his son, Mark and Stephanie Mitschke of Giddings; grandchildren, Thomas Garza, Rowan Mitschke and Lisa Mitschke all of Giddings; sisters, Dorothy and Gilbert Krause of Giddings, Ruth and Sylvin Mersiovsky of Giddings; nieces, Lisa and John Gay of Dickinson, Texas, Lori Clausen of Giddings; nephews, Stephen and Heather Mersiovsky, Rodney and Gina Mersiovsky and Jason and Sondi Mersiovsky all of Giddings; numerous other family members and friends. Mike’s parents preceded him in death. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. April 1, 1914 - October 13, 2007 He moved to Houston in 1929. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth Elizabeth Lehman, whom he met at the Houston area Grace Methodist Church. They were married forty years and had five children. He met and married his current wife, Juanita Stricklin Sorrell in 1978 just after he moved to Giddings, TX. David spent over 30 years with the United States Postal Service in the Houston area progressing from cabinet maker, to letter carrier, and finally to superintendent. David will be most remembered for his commitment to the Southern Baptist Church. He served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and leader in the senior ministries. He also served his community by volunteering at the Giddings State School, delivering Meals on Wheels, as docent at the Giddings Museum, and in the Rotary Club. In retirement, David spent many hours working in his woodshop and growing fruits and vegetables in his gardens. David is survived by his wife, Juanita Sorrell of Giddings, TX, his children, Pat Mitchell of Waco TX, Ruth Shepley of Houston, TX, David R. Sorrell of Tyler TX, Sally Welborn of Walnut Creek, CA, and Susan Baker of Houston, TX., his ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, his sister, Mary Laird of Montgomery, TX, his brothers, Mark Sorrell of Sun City, CA, Ben Sorrell of Conroe, TX, Merle Sorrell of Onalaska, TX and Sam Sorrell of Houston. November 16, 1911 – October 13, 2007 Ruth loved her family, visiting with friends and playing golf at Sharpstown Country Club, where she won several trophies. She was a charter member of Gethsemane United Methodist Church in Houston and a faithful member of Giddings United Methodist Church, as well as a member of the Agape Circle. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, C. B. Varnado; one brother, Frances Columbus Davis; one sister, Mary Louise Stanley. She is survived by a son, Dr. C David Varnado and wife Jerry Lynn of Giddings; Richard Lee Varnado and wife, Cynthia, of Boerne, TX; one daughter, Sharon Ruth Ferguson, and husband, David P. November 17, 1931 - October 13, 2007 She was born in Peirceton, Indiana on November 17, 1931. Her parents were Harry and Helen (Keplinger) Pollock. She married Charles England on September 3, 1948. Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Linda and husband Ken Konya of Lexington; sons, Mike and wife Margret England of Monroe, North Carolina, Terry and wife Faye England of Leesburg, Indiana; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; brother, Gene Pollock of Warsaw, Indiana; step-brother, Herbert Dahlquist of Michigan; step-sister, Betty Lou Pollock of Michigan and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sister, Harriet Shaull. September 28m 1915 – October 14, 2007 Rose was born on September 28, 1915 in Lee County to Joseph Mikulin and Albina (Maresh) Mikulin. She worked as a machinist and a teacher at Hughes Tool Co. for 37 years. She died on October 14, 2007. Rose is survived by her children: Ray and Ruth Collins of Houston, James and Sharon Collins of Dime Box; grandchildren: Bryan and Lori Collins of Cat Springs, Texas, Tracy and Jonathan Whittles of Sand Lake, Oregon, Dana and Jason Kasmiersky of Giddings, Damon Collins of Montgomery, Texas; nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws: Josephine Nimtz of Giddings, Evelyn Mikulin of Pearland, Texas, Laura Mikulin of Caldwell, Billie Jo Mikulin of Houston; many nieces, nephews and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parnets, nine brothers, two sisters and her son, Roy F. Collins. May 16, 1930 - October 8, 2007 George was born on May 16, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan. His parents were Ralph F. and Gladys (Bohrer) Johnson. He worked as a technician with Tracor in Austin for 22 years and retired in 1985. George lived in Bastrop for many years and moved to Lexington 14 years ago. George is survived by his son, Dale Wayne Johnson of Round Rock; his daughter, Carye Robinson of Austin; and his granddaughter, Ashley Hegstad of Austin. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Ralph Johnson, and his sisters, Edith Johnson and Grace Johnson. March 5, 1946 – October 10, 2007 Mike was born in Elgin on March 5, 1946, to Crispin and Petra (Gandara) Reynosa. Mike married Margaret Nevejas and lived in Rockdale for 30 years. He retired from ALCOA. Mike is survived by his wife, Margaret Reynosa of Rockdale; sons, Michael Reynosa, Jr. of Norman, Oklahoma, Daniel Lee Reynosa, Sr. of Rockdale, Arthur Renee Reynosa of Houston, Rick Austin Montelongo of Rockdale; daughters, Mary Ester Alvarez of Houston, Theresa Rodriguez of Houston, Nicole Michelle Reynosa of Rockdale; brothers, Johnny Reynosa of Houston, Frank Reynosa of Houston, Charles Reynosa of Elgin, George Reynosa of Georgetown; sisters, Elida Reynosa of Austin, Emma Torres of Austin, Mary Helen Porras of Manor; 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Mike’s son, David Andrew Reynosa, preceded him in death on September 12, 1984. September 22, 1947 – October 11, 2007 Pall Bearers were: Mark Henson, Nick Rundquist, Erwin Knippel, Hector Quintanar, Joe Kramer and Ron Davis. Michael was born in Houston on September 22, 1947 to Theron Eldridge “Eddie” Shofner and Novita Marie (Beaman) Shofner. He married Diane (David) Shofner on November 7, 1970 in Columbus, Texas. Michael attended the University of Texas at Austin and served in the National Guard during the 1970’s. He was an avid UT fan who had a great love of history, reading and crossword puzzles. Most importantly, he loved his family and friends. He was a member of the S.C.V., the Albert Sydney Johnson Camp, The Sons of the Republic of Texas and First Baptist Church in Round Rock. Michael was the owner of CCL, Inc. in Round Rock. Michael died at his home in Round Rock on October 11, 2007. Michael is survived by his wife, Diane Shofner of Round Rock; daughters, Anne-Marie and Mark Henson of Thrall, Marnie and Nick Rundquist of Round Rock; grandchildren, Nicholas and Katherine Henson of Thrall; Mary and Edgar Brister and family of Orange, Texas; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Matthew Shofner and his brother, Gary Russell, Jr. Memorials may be made to the Dell Children’s Medical Center in Round Rock. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple. He was born to Melvin and Ellie (Moore) Weems on October 13, 1913 in Cameron, Texas. Denson attended Rockdale I.S.D., served as class president for three years and was captain of the football team. He attended Southwestern University on a football scholarship. He married Irene Georgia Karisch in 1936 in Hempstead, Texas. He lived and worked at Freeport of Dow Chemical until WWII when he enlisted in the Navy. After his Honorable discharge, he returned to Dow Chemical. Denson moved to Rockdale in 1951 and owned and operated Weems Super Market from 1951 to 1961. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Rockdale and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Rockdale. Denson is survived by his son, George Weems and wife Ann of Borne; his brother, Jack Weems and wife Phyllis of West Columbia; his sister, Eva Sides and husband Marvin of Rockdale; his grandchildren: Coy Weems and wife Noel, Stacey Collier and husband Glenn, Rebecca McCoy and husband Evan, Elizabeth Jones and husband Jesse and Katherine Irene Weems; his great-grandchildren: Grant Collier, Blake Collier and Anna Irene Collier; his sisters-in-law: Elizabeth Weems and Susie Weems both of Rockdale. He was preceded in death by his wife on October 8, 1981. |
