He had fallen ill in August while returning from a trip to Atlanta, Georgia. Donald Otis Nickason was born November 2, 1936 in Moline, Ill. to Glenn and Margaret (Walker) Nickason. He was raised and attended school there. Don remained in Illinois until moving to Texas in 1982. He married Iola (Babe) Nielson on August 31, 1957. From this marriage he had two sons and a daughter. They divorced in 1963. On August 8, 1964 he married Dolores (Burns) Walton, gaining three stepdaughters. He and Dolores had three sons. She passed on November 27, 2003. He chose to spend the remainder of his life with Ruby Billig adding two step-sons to his family. Don’s was a truck driver for many years. This work suited his personality as he loved to meet new people and see new places. He was working for Key Energy in Giddings when he retired in 2003. He was a member of the Lions Club. For several years he enjoyed the Senior Citizens Center in Lexington, meeting friends and organizing get-togethers. He attended church at the Eagles Wing Christian Center in Lexington. Don loved sports, especially football, but his passion was his guitar. He loved playing it surrounded by everyone having a great time. He was always in the center of things telling his stories, and laughing often. Don was a talented musician. He loved to sing and laugh and make others do the same. He was an “entertainer” in every sense of the word. When Don would speak, play guitar, or sing, there was sure to be joy. He even had the opportunity to carry that joy oversees when he went to Japan to attend his son’s wedding were he performed to a mostly Japanese audience. He developed a fondness for Japanese music and the Japanese culture. Despite an abusive childhood, Don broke the cycle and possessed kindness and gentleness to children like no other. Don rarely spoke of his own problems but would gladly step up and bare the burden of someone else’s troubles. His strength was one of his greatest assets but often greatly underrated. It was this characteristic that made Don such a tremendous friend, co-worker, employee and father. Although the title of “step” is used to describe many of his children, he never knew a “step-child”. He loved every one of his children equally and was loved by all the same way. Don leaves behind to miss him, his wife Ruby; his sons, Scott of Plano, Texas, Dan/Chris (Akemi) of McKinney, Texas, Curt (Ladonna) of Lexington, Brady (Vicky) Geneseo, Ill.; daughter, Toni Jewell (Todd) of Forney, Texas; three step-daughters, Sheila Sullivan (John) of Hooppole Ill., Debra Walton (Dave) of Caldwell, Alice Henry (Marty) of Atkinson, Ill.; two step-sons, Ricky Billig (Sheila) of Lexington, Kevin Billig (Kathy) of Giddings.
