Herman “Ham” Franklin Kovar

Funeral services for H.F. “Ham” Kovar, 86, of Ledbetter, Texas, were held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Giddings with Tim Pitts officiating.

Herman Franklin Kovar was born on July 15, 1932 in Old Dime Box, Texas, one of ten children born to John Joe Kovar and Lydia Mae (Alcorn) Kovar. He married Mary Sue Garner on May 23, 1953 in Groesbeck, Texas. Ham retired from Southern Pacific Railroad as a maintenance machine operator after 45 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Giddings, the Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Department and the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and looking after his yard, especially mowing.

Ham passed away the evening of Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Jefferson Place Assisted Living Center in La Grange.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Lydia Kovar; his wife of 57 years, Mary “Sue” Kovar; one sister, Bernice Taylor and two brothers, Robert “Bob” Kovar and Walter “Buster” Kovar.

Ham is survived by his two sons, Richard Kovar & his wife, Linda of Ledbetter, and Renee Kovar of Crystal Beach; his daughter, Marissa Brooks & her husband, Damion of College Station; ten grandchildren, Brock Kovar & his wife, Melanie of Bastrop, Chad Kovar of Austin, Christopher Kovar & his wife, Brooke of Giddings, Bridget Kovar & David Bradshaw of Pflugerville, Melissa Reed & her husband, Jammie of Ft. Worth, P.J. Albrecht & his wife, Melissa of Edinburg, Blake Naylor of Brenham, Bradley Naylor of Brenham, Justin Thomas “J.T.” Naylor & his wife, Heidi of Brenham, and Ava Willrich of College Station; nineteen great grandchildren; two brothers, David Kovar & his wife, Betty of Giddings and Johnny Kovar & Leanne Diab of Rockdale; four sisters, Billie Marie Brinkman & her husband, Buddy of Caldwell, Patsy Bollier of Humble, Polly Corbett of Rogers and Alice Price of Wortham as well as several nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers were Michael Brinkman, Rodney Price, William Kovar, Justin Roemer, Danny Kovar and Wendel Kovar. Honorary pallbearers were Rhonda Roemer and Connie Melaragno. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 600 Sunrise Avenue, Giddings, Texas 78942, or to Hospice Brazos Valley, 1048 North Jefferson, La Grange, Texas 78945.
