Gilbert Louis Lara

Funeral services for Gilbert Lara, 62, of Giddings, were held on Friday, February 2, 2018 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Giddings with Father Uche Andeh officiating. A private family committal service will be held in the Giddings City Cemetery at a later date. Gilberto Louis Lara was born on March 14, 1955 in Giddings, Texas, the son of Richard and Mary (Gonzales) Lara. He passed away the afternoon of Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at the Seton Medical Center in Austin.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents.

Gilbert attended Giddings High School and was a member of the 1973 Football District Tri- Champs. After high school Gilbert worked with his Godfather, Antonio Gonzales, at the Texaco Service Station on HWY 77. He enjoyed this work especially driving his Godfather’s wrecker. It was during this time that he met a life-long friend, Bob Tharp. After this, Gilbert ran a taco business and also worked for the Giddings State Home and School. For the last 15 years of employment, Gilbert was a travelling car sales rep.

Gilbert was a fan of the Giddings Buffs as well as the Texas Longhorns. He enjoyed playing golf and was a fan of John Wayne and Elvis Presley. Gilbert loved his family and grandkids. He also enjoyed being a part of the Gonzales family reunion and hanging out at the barb que pits.

Gilbert was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Fourth Degree Charter Member.

He is survived by three children, Joseph and Susan Lara of Austin, Juliann and Lee Ritchey of Austin and Joey and Jessica Carlton of Houston; eight grandchildren, Kathrynn, Dawson, Kaylee, Cody, Clayton, Adia, Theron and Cole; one sister, Rebecca Vasquez of Sugarland; six brothers, James Lara and Eva Jackson of San Springs, Oklahoma, Joseph Robert Lara of Luling, Michael Lara and Anna Salinas of Hutto, Edward Lara of Giddings, Thomas Lara and Sharon Maass of Bryan and Charles Lara of Giddings; sixteen nieces and nephews; Maricella Vasquez, Jessica Vasquez, Gabriella Vasquez, Damon Lara, Yolanda Fowler, Adrian Lara, Dane Lara, Marcus Lara, Dustin Lara, Daniella Lara, Elizabeth Padron, Christine Lara, Angelica Cluck, Esela Compean, Larissa Lara and Jordyn Lara, as well as numerous great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.
