In 1977, he became pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Arthur where he served until 1984. From 1985 until 1994, he served the congregation of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Austin. After serving at Redeemer in Austin, Paul resigned from the pastoral ministry and worked for a local funeral home for several years. In 1995, he married Mary Lynn Mcneal.

In time, he moved to the ELCA where he served the congregation of Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine from 1997 until 2010. Even following his retirement in 2013, Paul continued to help at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Giddings and with the Shared Lutheran Ministries of Fayette County (SLMFC) where he preached at two of the four congregations each Sunday and taught bible study on Wednesday nights. During his ministry, Paul also served on the Board of Regents at Concordia University Texas, was a Pastoral Counselor for the LWML, served as a chaplain at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin and was a Stephen Ministry trainer.
