Frances Louise Gersch

Funeral services for Frances Gersch, 86, of Northrup, Texas, were held on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas.

Frances Louise (Schatte) Gersch was born on May 12, 1931 in Giddings, Texas, the daughter of Johann Christoph Schatte & Louise Henrietta Rachel Emma (Umlang) Schatte. She was baptized on May 17, 1931 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. Herman Schmidt and was confirmed on April 1, 1944 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings by Rev. Max Studtmann. Her confirmation verse was John 14:6, “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ ” Frances was united in marriage to Herman Theodore Gersch on October 23, 1952 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings by Rev. Max Studtmann. They were blessed with two daughters, Cheryl and Cynthia. Frances and Herman lived in California while Herman served in the United States Navy. After Herman received his discharge from the Navy, the family moved to Houston where Frances worked in the meat industry for 17 years. In 1980, they moved back to Giddings where she was a fulltime homemaker.

Frances loved arts and crafts. She became a talented artist, painting many pictures which decorate her home. She also loved making dolls. Frances was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. As a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, she had been active with the Ladies Aid, the LWML, and volunteered distributing tapes of the church services to nursing home residents and shut-ins.

Frances passed away on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Cornerstone Hospital of Austin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, J.C. & Louise Schatte; five sisters, Ottilie Prellop, Lillian Oltmann, Marie Fritsche, Dorothy Wieder, and Elizabeth Kappler, and four brothers, Henry Schatte, Christopher Schatte, Louis Schatte and Edwin Schatte.

Frances is survived by her husband of 65 years, Herman Gersch of Northrup; two daughters, Cheryl Toff & her husband, Howard of Tucson, Arizona and Cynthia Gersch of Houston; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Schatte of Giddings and Elma Schatte of Houston, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Bryan Gersch, David Gersch, Dustin Gersch, Chris Schatte, Mark Schatte and Chris Wieder. Honorary pallbearers will be her nieces, nephews and Bea Behrens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin or to the charity of one’s choice.
