Ralph Edward “R.E”. Merritt

Memorial services for Ralph Edward “R.E.” Merritt of Dime Box, Texas were held on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings.

Ralph Edward “R.E.” Merritt, 75, died Thursday, October 12, 2017 at his home near Dime Box, Texas after a lengthy battle with cancer.

R.E. was born January 12, 1942, in Artesia, New Mexico, to Ralph David Merritt and Winnie Hancock who preceded him in death, as well as his sister Jataun Durbin. Younger brother David resides in Lamesa.

He is survived by three children: Kristie and Brad Tooley of Canyon, Eddie Merritt of Dime Box, and Charlotte and Joe Allen of Boerne, and grandchildren: Kristopher and Brooke Tooley of Waco; Shanna and Ty Jones of Lubbock, Tara and Chase Lenz of Franklin, Kenya Lane of Blanco, Brooks Lane of Blanco, Cheyenne and Nathan Allen of Boerne, and 10 great grandchildren.

R.E. was known for his tenacious, stand-out abilities in athletics, business and hobbies.

He graduated from Andrews High in 1960 where he was a member of the State Championship Mustang Track team, which won the 440-yard dash and mile relay in 1959 and 1960. He went to A&M and ran track for Texas A&M, where he earned a BBA in business. After college R.E. served a tour of duty for the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War and was awarded two Purple Hearts.

R.E. experienced great business success in Odessa, Austin and West Texas where he operated night clubs, restaurants and helped found a successful banking group. He also operated successful cattle and horse operations, including owner of 1999 AQHA Horse of the Year “Playing Stylish.”

R.E. was a member of the 12th Man Foundation at Texas A & M and also a member of the Former Student Association, and a member of the AQHA.

R.E. enjoyed playing poker, raising livestock and watching College Football, and also watching the news.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Brazos Valley Hospice or to a charity of one’s choice.
