Alexander “Alex” Futujma

Alexander “Alex” Futujma died peacefully surrounded by family on September 2, 2017 at the age of 66.

Alex is survived by his wife, Laura; children, Shayne (Justin Cantu) and Alexander Joseph; siblings, Erica Breaux, Reinhart Futujma (Deborah), and Stephen Futujma (Tammy). He is preceded in death by his parents, Bogdan Futujma and Appolonia Newton.

Alex was born on September 28, 1950 in West Germany. He spent his childhood in Southern California and moved to Texas as a young adult. He married his wife Laura on December 24, 1980 and the couple had two children, Shayne and AJ. Alex was a craftsman by trade, working as a tile mason for most of his career.

After retirement, he enjoyed spending time in his workshop, making furniture and other crafts for his family and friends. Although he created many wonderful works of art, he always felt that his children were his greatest creation. Alex had been a member of the Post Oak Island Masonic Lodge #181 in Beaukiss, Texas for 28 years and was presented the Golden Trowel Award on January 6, 2011.

Alex had a larger than life personality and never met a stranger. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and pets.

A celebration of life service was held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home in Elgin, TX.

In lieu of flowers, you are welcome to donate to your local animal shelter or humane society.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Edward Chafizadeh and Beth Jackson of Cardio Texas, for the exceptional care they have provided Alex for the past 15 years. The family would also like to thank Dr. Michael Shapiro, Dr. Angel Pulido, Dr. Christopher Jimenez and the Intensive Care nursing and respiratory staff at St. David’s Medical Center, who treated our loved one and our family with the utmost care.
