Darrell Douglas Abke

Funeral services for Darrell Abke, 69, of Giddings, are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at the Burleson County Cowboy Church in Caldwell, Texas with Harvey Abke officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Giddings American Legion York Post 276, will immediately follow in Giddings Memorial Park in Giddings, Texas. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Burleson County Cowboy Church in Caldwell.

Darrell was born on October 2, 1947 in Navasota, Texas to Earl and Irene (Finke) Abke. After graduating high school in Katy, Darrell chose to join the Navy where he spent a short time in Vietnam before being medically discharged. Darrell then returned home to Houston where he married his wife of 36 years, Shelley (Seeton) Abke, on May 30, 1981 and continued his lifelong career as a freight broker.

After moving to Giddings in 1993, Darrell enjoyed many evenings on his front porch with his wife, watching his grandchildren play and visiting with family and friends. Darrell loved people, had a passion for sports and looked forward to his time spent in the great outdoors. During the winter months, he spent time with his wife, family and many friends at the deer lease looking for the “big one.” A devoted Astros & Giddings Buffalo fan, Darrell could be found coaching, watching or cheering for his children and grandchildren as they played the sport they loved, all while having the words needed for every situation. Darrell never met a stranger, gave the best hugs and had a smile that was contagious. He was a sweet and loving husband, a devoted father and an amazing friend to all he met. His loving and outgoing personality will be dearly missed by so many.

Darrell passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 9, 2017 in Austin, Texas at St. David’s Medical Center with his wife by his side.
