Irene Ruth Moerbe

Funeral services for Irene Moerbe, 96, of Giddings, Texas were held on Friday, August 18, 2017 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner and Rev. Chris Nietubicz officiating.

Irene Ruth (Schubert) Moerbe was born on August 19, 1920 in Northrup, Texas, the daughter of Herman Carl Schubert and Anna Amanda (Michalk) Winkler Schubert. She was baptized on August 29, 1920 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas by Rev. Oswald Lugenheim and was confirmed on March 25, 1934 also at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. Herman Schmidt. Her confirmation verse was Psalm 145:18-19, “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them”. Irene was united in marriage to Herbert John Moerbe on October 23, 1938 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin by Rev. Herman Schmidt. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Jane and Judy. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings where she had been an active member of the Ladies Aid. Irene was also involved with the Lee County Senior Citizens Center and the Texas German Society. She was a loving and devoted homemaker who cherished the time she spent with her family. Her home served as the family meeting place every Sunday after church where they would visit and enjoy coffee and her baked treats. Her recipes for meatballs, coffee cakes and homemade ice pops are used by her family even today. She enjoyed playing dominoes, bingo and doing a good puzzle, and also enjoyed playing shuffleboard while vacationing in Rockport. She was an excellent seamstress who lovingly made outfits and did alterations for her family and friends. Irene also worked for Sports n Stuff in Giddings where she sewed patches on countless letterman jackets throughout the years. She also enjoyed growing plants and won numerous awards for her African violets.

After suffering from declining health over the last couple of years, Irene passed away peacefully during the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at the Giddings Residence and Rehabilitation Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five sisters, Alma Schulze & her husband, Alvin, Lena Schautschick & her husband, Carl, Alma Sury & her husband, Emil, Augusta Miertschin & her husband, Fred and Esther Behrens & her husband, Otto and three brothers, Gus Schubert & his wife, Anna, Gerhard Schubert & his wife, Matilda and Emil Schubert & his wife, Pauline as well as two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law and their spouses, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jane Orts & her husband, Joe of Giddings and Judy Matthijetz & her husband, Albert of Giddings; four grandchildren, Sharon Proske & her husband, Ricky of Giddings, Douglas Matthijetz & his wife, Inez of Corpus Christi, Christine Hunt & her husband, Shannon of Giddings and Janna Nail & her husband, James of College Station; seven great grandchildren, Sara Prellop & her husband, Bruce of Giddings, Christopher Proske of Giddings, Marisa Matthijetz of Corpus Christi, Isaac Matthijetz of Corpus Christi, Coy Hunt of Giddings, Ely Hunt of Giddings and Bailey Nail of College Station, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the charity of one’s choice.
