Tootsie Named Citizen of the Year

The Lexington Chamber of Commerce named Tootsie Tomanetz Citizen of the Year. More than 40 years ago, she and her late husband White, bought the Lexington Meat Market, where she served barbecue on Saturday mornings, much like she does today for Kerry Bexley at Snow’s BBQ.

Last Summer, Tootsie received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Giddings Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards Banquet.

There’s hardly a month that goes by that Texas Monthly magazine doesn’t reference Tootsie for her barbecue prowess. She is probably the most famous pit master in Texas and maybe in the country. Two weeks ago, Texas Monthly tweeted out a sincere Happy Birthday message to Tootsie that was seen and/or retweeted several thousand times. One recent post on Snow’s BBQ and Tootsie put up by a food blogger (foodydirect) had more than 850,000 views.

So Lexington will honor her again this Saturday as she rides in the Homecoming Parade, along with the Parade’s Grand Marshals, Nell, Jo, and Jerry, Jr. Poston.
