The Rosy Side

by Pastor Trey Comstock Blue and Lexington United Methodist Church

I was recently reminded of the hymn, “We Are One in the Spirit.” If you don’t know it, that’s okay. The title sums the idea up well. It includes, “We are one in the Spirit. We are one in the Lord, and we that all unite may one day be restored.” It’s true that in many ways, all Christians are not yet one. We are split up into denominations, subsets of denominations, non-denominations, different congregations, and even cliques inside congregations. We spend a lot of time disagreeing about theology, sacraments, hymnals, projection screens, and carpet color. To one way of looking, that hymn seems fantastically optimistic.

Yet, this week, we will all celebrate Easter – the one that I am certain on which all Christians agree. Our title as “Christians” challenges us to be “mini Christs.” The death and resurrection of Jesus is the cosmos-altering event that makes us who we are. It is the thing that unites us no matter what tries to divide. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Christmas may have the better marketing department, but Easter is our most important day on the calendar. If our shared central calm as Christians is that we are people who have seen salvation, Easter is that first glimpse.

In the spirit of Christian unity, I invite all of y’all to gather as one body on Easter morning. The Lexington Ministerial Alliance is hosting its annual sunrise service at 7am on the Square. It is a rare chance to step outside of our dozen or so separate congregations and celebrate resurrection as a more united body of Christ. We can sing praises and make a joyful noise with one voice. We can together declare that “Christ is risen. He is risen indeed.” We can share at least in a moment of being one in the Spirit. The arguments, squabbles, and debates will still be there when the service is over. Let us together testify that our God is greater than anything that can pull us apart.
