Kenneth “Pappa C” Maynard Cowan
Funeral services for Kenneth Cowan, 79 of Paige, Texas,were held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings with Tim Pitts officiating. Burial, with Masonic graveside services were provided by the J.D. Giddings Masonic Lodge #280.
Kenneth Maynard Cowan was born on December 14, 1937 in Ledbetter, Texas to Maynard C. & Ona Mae (Stork) Cowan. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized when he was 10 years old at the First Baptist Church in Giddings. He attended Dime Box and Giddings public schools and graduated from Giddings High School with the Class of 1956. Kenneth always said he also attended the College of Hard Knocks and Lessons Well Learned and graduated Summa Come Loudly. He met his soulmate and lifelong love, Marjorie Lee Hartsfield, at Nona Notaw’s Café in Kenedy, Texas where she worked. They fell deeply in love and were married on March 1, 1958 at the First Assembly of God in Kenedy, Texas. They were married for over 50 years when Marjorie preceded him in death on May 14, 2008. Kenneth worked for the Western Union Telegraph Company from August 13, 1956 until August 15, 1987. He then went to work for Invader Boat Company, M & M Lumber and Brookshire Brothers in Giddings before finally retiring in 2001. He and Marjorie also worked together at the Northwest Diner in Giddings and the Sons of Herman Bar & Grill in Paige. Kenneth was an active member of the J.D. Giddings Masonic Lodge #280, Order of the Eastern Star #996 in Lexington, the Paige Sons of Hermann Lodge #154, the Paige Lions Club and a faithful supporter of the Paige Volunteer Fire Department.
Kenneth passed away during the early morning hours of Sunday, March 5, 2017 at University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Maynard & Ona Mae Cowan; his wife, Marjorie Cowan; his son, Tommy Cowan; his granddaughter, Elizabeth Cowan; his brother, Charles Cowan and two sons-in-law, Jimmy Barnett and George Boswell.
Kenneth is survived by his four children, John Cowan & his wife, Pam of Paige and their children, Toni & Cody Conforti, Randi Cowan, Terri Cowan & Max Jones, John Caleb Cowan & Mackenzie Middlebrook and Liliana Cowan, Martha Barnett of Giddings and her children, George Boswell, John Boswell, Leana Dayberry & Joe Navarro and Bobbie Barnett & Christopher Bishop, Adrian Cowan & his wife, Angela of McDade and their children, Wyatt Cowan, Christopher Cowan & Jaydon Cowan and Andrea Ray & her husband, Kenny of Paige; Tommy’s children, Rebekah Grimm & her husband, Jonathan, Lalah Miller & her husband, Colby and Amanda Weber and Mikalah Weber; nineteen great grandchildren; two special sons, Donald McClain of Magnolia and Daniel Enloe of Lexington; two sisters, Janis Hannes & her husband, Calvin of Giddings and Eva Ponfick & her husband, Jimmy of Beaumont; special friends, Gloria Ray & Herbert Eschberger of Paige, as well as several nieces and nephews.
