James W. Smith

James “Smutt” Smith was born May 26, 1923 in Lee County to Ed and Idella (Sarrett) Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Lee County and attended Lexington I.S.D. He joined the Navy and served during World War II.

He married Evelyn Loraine Smith on December 25, 1952 and they had two children. He retired from Alcoa in 1976 after 22 years. He continued to haul cattle after his retirement. He was an active fisherman, enjoyed building cattle feeders and he and Jimmy went to town every day to collect the latest news. He loved being with his family. He was a member of the Lexington American Legion Post 6.

James passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2015 in the Scott & White Hospital in Taylor at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Smith of Lexington; daughter, Deborah Lorraine Schindler and Roy of Lexington; son, Jimmy Wayne Smith of Lexington; brother, Harrold Smith and Ruby of Lexington; sister, Lois Kubena of Lexington; two grandchildren, Daphne Boles and Henry of Mayfield, Kentucky and Diana Stokes and Randy of Lexington; six great-grandchildren, Jonathon Stokes, Justin Stokes, Jasmine Stokes, Lissa Boles, Nathan Boles and Michaela Boles.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 4, 2016 in the American Legion Hall in Lexington with burial in the Adina Cemetery near Lexington. Pastor Ronnie Gregory of First Christian Church in Elgin officiated.

Pallbearers were Roy Schindler, Randy Stokes, Henry Boles, Jonathon Stokes, Wesley Hobbs, Roger Payne, and Jeff Ruthven. Honorary pallbearer was Jimmy Smith.
