Fred August Laake

Funeral services for Fred August Laake, 72, of Paige, Texas, are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings with Preacher Mike Pierce officiating. Burial will follow at the Friendship Cemetery in Hills, Texas. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 22, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.

Fred August Laake was born on April 29, 1943 in La Grange, TX to Alfred and Lydia (Raschke) Laake. At the age of 3 the family moved to Houston. He was baptized in 1943 at St. John Lutheran Church in Praire Valley and Confirmed in 1957 at Zion Lutheran Church in Houston. He graduated from Sam Houston High School in Houston in 1961. Fred worked for four years with the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was united in marriage to Carol Awalt in Paige, TX. Fred owned the Quality Sign and Lighting Company in Lufkin, TX and the Cedar Factory in Paige, TX. Fred also was employed by the J. Irwin Company for many years. He was an avid musician who played with the Paint Creek Thunderheads, loved wood working, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed his membership in the Paige Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Lydia Laake.

Fred is survived by his wife, Carol Awalt of Paige; four sons, Greg Laake of Houston, Doug Laake and wife Lisa of Hempstead, Russell Laake and wife Kerrica of Austin and Michael Laake of Oregon; step children from a previous marriage, Ernie Ashford, Mona Ashford, and Marsha Pleasant; seven grandchildren, Danny Laake of Houston, Katherine Laake of Houston, Becca Laake of Houston, Johnathan Laake of Houston, Emily Laake of Hempstead, Cooper Laake of Austin and Maxwell Laake of Austin; two brothers James Laake and wife Mary of Houston and David Laake of Paige, as well as other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to the House of Prayer in Paige, TX or to the charity of one’s choice.
