Steven Wayne Keng

Steven Wayne Keng was born on February 11, 1951 in Giddings, Texas to Thomas Winston Keng and Arline (Liberty) Keng. He grew up in Giddings and graduated from Giddings High School in 1969. He attended college at Texas A&M in College Station where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1972. He then attended law school at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. He graduated in 1976. Steven had practiced law in the Lee County area since that time.

On February 29, 1992, Steven married Mary Kay Knittel, his high school sweetheart, at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, ELCA in Giddings. He was an active member at Martin Luther Lutheran Church and held various council offices and sang in the church choir until the church’s separation from the ELCA. Steven spearheaded the birth of Grace Lutheran Church, ELCA in March of 2010 and even held worship services in his home in the beginning. At the time of his death, he was Minister of Evangelism and had served as president of the congregation for two terms.

Steven had served the Lee County community as Justice of the Peace from 1978 until 1982 and as Lee County Attorney from 1984 until 1996. He was a member of the Giddings Volunteer Fire Department for fifteen years where he oversaw the antique hobby horse restoration project at Fireman’s Park. Steven was a past member of the Lions Club and a former cub scout leader. He had a lifelong love of music and sang in the Lee County Opera and Handel’s Messiah. Steven was a member of a Christian band, Rushing Wind, and served as a music team leader for Walk to Emmaus.

Steven had many varied interests including playing the guitar, singing, collecting motorcycles, biking and sharing his vast knowledge on various subjects. He always had a smile and a joke to tell. He never met a stranger. Steven was adamant about helping others, especially those on the margins of society. He was a loving son, husband, brother, father and friend who always put others first.

Steven passed away on Monday, June 15, 2015 in an Austin hospital following a battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Winston Keng.

Steven is survived by his wife, Mary Kay Keng of Giddings; three children, Wesley T. Keng & his wife, Leticia of Giddings, Jeremy J. Keng of Austin and Stephanie Kay Keng of Lubbock; three grandchildren, William, Alexander and Violet Keng all of Giddings; his mother, Arline Keng of Giddings; two sisters, Kathy Ray & her husband, John of Giddings and Judy Keaghey & her husband, Jeff of Giddings, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and the Grace Lutheran Church family.

Funeral services were June 19, 2015 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Giddings with Rev. Greg Gaskamp and Rev. Al Hoerig of Grace Lutheran Church in Giddings officiating. Burial followed in the Giddings City Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Charlie Akin, Gary Doyle, James Eichler, Taylor Larson, Keith Leonard, Richard Surovik, Randy Stewart and Ben Droemer.

In lieu of flowers, the Keng family recommends that memorial contributions be made to the Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund or to the charity of one’s choice
