Marilyn Witherspoon

Irene was born to the late Ben and Margaret (Mock) Hoffart in Conroe, Texas on May 22, 1948.

She graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1969, with a degree in education. On February 27, 1970, she was united in marriage to Edward Ray Witherspoon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Conroe. During their time together, she and her husband were blessed with two children, Jake and Chrissy. During there time in Tanglewood, Irene, unfortunately, became a widow at the young age of 38, but persevered through her faith in the Lord, a loving devotion to her children and her strong, independent nature. Her career in education spanned 37 years as a dedicated junior high and high school math teacher at public schools in north and central Texas.

She enjoyed life to the fullest, loved to socialize, and will be remembered as the “party planner.” She was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, aunt, cousin, and friend. Her hobbies included collecting antiques, fishing, and going to the beach. In retirement, she loved spending time with her family and friends and eagerly anticipated the next opportunity to spend time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Ray Witherspoon; father, Ben Hoffart; mother, Margaret Hoffart; brother, Bernard Hoffart; sister, Margie Stubbs; and brother-in-law, Hugh Scarborough.

She is survived by her son, William “Jake” Witherspoon and wife Megan; daughter, Christene “Chrissy” Fischer and husband Jason; grandchildren Lyndon Fischer, Anna Fischer, and Ella Witherspoon; sister, Rose Scarborough; brother, Willie Hoffart and wife Theresa; sister, Janice Leck and husband Kenneth; sister-inlaw, Mary Hoffart-Brooks; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockdale on March 24, 2015. Interment followed at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Rockdale.

Pallbearers were Jim Butz, Mike Hoffart, Paul Hoffart, Tommy Meadows, Trent McNamara, Allen Murray, Arthur Scarborough, Mike Scarborough, Keith Stubbs and honorary pallbearer, Andy Hoffart.
