Andrew Smith

Andy was born on January 11, 1919 in Cooks Point, Texas to Raymond Harold Smith and Nannie Elizabeth (Wallin) Smith. After graduating from Caldwell High School, Andy traveled to Beaumont for a talent competition put on by Cliff Bruner and the Texas Wonders where he won and the band asked him to play the steel guitar with them all summer. He soon received a call from his mother telling him to quit and go to college. Andy attended Sam Houston University for several years. On April 15, 1940 Andy married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Moses, in Liberty, TX. To this union they were blessed with five children, Andrea, Patrick, Kathryn, Robin and Jeffrey . He joined the Army on Oct. 27, 1944. He was a ranger in the 1393rd Engineer Battalion and became a paratrooper. After his military service, he started A.W. Smith Construction Company. After the construction business, Andy decided to go to Camp Gary to teach heavy equipment operation. He started the Lee County Cattlemen’s Association after the theft of five of his own livestock. With this new association, he became very active in the Lee County Junior Livestock Show and was the announcer. He was asked by Brenham KWHI Radio station to start a Show called Cattle Country after a reply he submitted to a comment on cattle prices. Andy loved helping children and playing at Country Music Monday; his contributions in life will always be remembered.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Smith and Nannie Maddox; three children, Kathryn Smith, Robin Smith and Jeffrey Smith; brother R.J. Smith Sr. and wife Ruby Lee; two sisters, Norma and husband Frank Kubin and Willie Mae and husband Reid Phelps, and three brothers in law and sisters in law, M. Byron and wife Mildred Moses, Ola and husband George Owen, and Iris and husband Jim Kyle .

Andy is survived by his two children, Andrea Elizabeth Friedell of Garland and Patrick Wallin & wife Nina Smith of Giddings, four grandchildren; Elizabeth and husband Mark Melancon of Garland, James Jeffrey Dukes of Garland, Randy Wallin and wife Erin of Cypress and Andy Ray and wife Adrian Smith of Corpus Christi, three great grandchildren; Hunter Wallin Smith, Kamryn Victoria Melancon and Lexi Elizabeth Melancon, friend Millie Jones of College Station, TX and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Giddings with Rev. Chris Harrison officiating. Burial followed in the St. John’s Cemetery, Dime Box, TX.

Serving as pallbearers were James Dukes, Mark Melancon, Andy Smith, Randy Smith, John Smith, Scott Smith and Cameron Absnaider. Honorary Pallbearers were R.J. Smith Jr., Charles Smith, Jacob Beran, Roy Boling, Doug Westfall, Walter Roskey, Billy Roskey and Tim Pitts.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Lee County Jr. Livestock Show or to the charity of one’s choice.
