Lena Clara German

May 16, 1922 - June 21, 2014

Lena was born in Dime Box on May 16, 1922, to Arthur and Laura Spitzenberger Anschutz. She graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Dime Box High School in 1940. While in school, she worked for the NYA and for the CPC in Bastrop. In 1940, she married Eldie Whitsel, and to this union, four daughters were born. As a farmer’s wife, Lena worked in the fields for many years, then operated Hiway Grocery on Highway 21 for 28 years. Lena and Eldie were also caretakers of an immigrant couple from Czechslovakia, Jan and Teresia Turecek, from 1944 until their deaths.

After the 1971 death of Eldie, who was Lee County Commissioner of Precinct 4, Lena assumed that job and became the second female County Commissioner in the State of Texas. She served from 1971 to 1978. In 1975, she married Fletcher German, Jr. of College Station. In 1978, Lena and Fletcher moved to College Station where Lena worked for Texas A&M University until her retirement in 1984.

Lena was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Roy and Vernon Anschutz, her first husband, Eldie Whitsel, her second husband Fletcher German, Jr., and son-in-law Wayne Meadows.

She is survived by her four daughters, Susie and Merrill Brushaber of Georgetown, Texas, Mildred and Andy Anderson of Bisbee, Arizona, Jeanie and Alvin Gold of College Station, Texas, and Wanda and Dennis Zwernemann of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by a step-son, Dan and LaNell German of Bryan and step-daughter, Barbara and Dan Hogan of Little Elm, Texas, brother-in-law Sam and Louise German, sistersin law Gaynell and Charles Boyd, Mary Lois Huckaby, and Cathy and Byron Holligan, 10 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, a close relative, Helen Moerbe of Giddings, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Lena lived with Alzheimer’s disease for many years. “Although your memory had faded, ours has not, and we will always fondly remember your love, hard work, dedication and the sacrifices you made for us.”

The family would like to acknowledge with special thanks the staff at Brazos Valley Hospice Inpatient Facility, and the nurses and staff of Fortress Health and Rehab where Lena spent nine years as a resident.

Lena Anschutz Whitsel German, 92, of College Station, formerly of Dime Box, passed away on June 21, 2014, at the Hospice Brazos Valley Inpatient Facility in Bryan. Funeral Services were held at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings, Texas, on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Burial was at Scott Cemetery in Old Dime Box, Texas.

Serving as pallbearers will be Barry Gold, Robert Spacek, David Meadows, Matthew Petty, Carter Evans and Brad Zwernemann. Honorary pallbearer will be Cheryl Dobos.
