Irene Loraine Pohorelsky

April 10, 1928 - December 6, 2013

Irene Loraine Kilian Pohorelsky died at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 26 days at Oakland Manor Nursing Center in Giddings on December 6, 2013. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with interment in the Giddings City Cemetery.

Irene was born on April 10, 1928 to Paul Gerhard and Mary (Zindler) Kilian in Lee County, Texas. She was baptized on April 29, 1928 by Pastor Osthoff. Irene was confirmed on March 29, 1942 at St. John Lutheran Church in Lincoln, where her confirmation verse was Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

She married William Lee McCowan, and their union was blessed by a daughter, Carol. During this time she worked for the Kaspers at their meat market in Austin. After Mr. McCowan’s death she returned to Giddings where she began working at City Meat Market, a position she held for 30 years. After returning to Giddings, she was married to Jimmie William Pohorelsky, Sr. until his passing in September, 2013. Irene enjoyed shopping, traveling, playing dominoes and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She always enjoyed being with her family and friends.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, William Lee McCowan and Jimmie William Pohorelsky, Sr. and a brother-in-law, LeRoy Schlabach.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol McCowan Davis and husband, Kenneth of Giddings; a step-son, Jimmie Pohorelsky, Jr. and wife, Lynidean of Giddings; a sister, Gertrude Kilian Schlabach of Lincoln; one granddaughter, Carla Tucker of Oklahoma; four step-grandchildren, Jimmie Pohorelsky III and wife, Marsha of Giddings, Kristiana Nicole Padgett and husband, David of Giddings, Robin Kay Pohorelsky of Dallas, and Thomas Jon Pohorelsky and wife, Kelly of Ft. Worth; four great grandchildren, Miladie Pohorelsky, Hadlie Pohorelsky, Codi Padgett and and Paige Padgett; a niece, Susan Robinson and husband, Stephen of Lincoln; a nephew, Steven Schlabach of Houston and numerous other beloved family and friends.

Memorials have been requested for either the Ladies Aid or Christian Care Ministry at Immanuel Lutheran Church, or a charity of one’s choice.
