Eagles Try Yoe as Foe

by Mike Organ

Lexington travels to Cameron Friday night to test the defending state champion Yoemen. The Yoe were victors last Friday over Waco Connally, 37-34. The Yoe victory was a comeback-type, winning on a touchdown late in the game. Cameron has shown a propensity for staging comebacks to win games in the last couple of years. No early lead is safe against the Yoe.

The Yoe won the state championship last season and appear to be ready to defend. The Connally team they beat last week is a very strong 3A team. The Yoe return six starters offensively and defensively.

The top returning starter is the state’s defensive MVP in linebacker Somari Wright. Wright had 245 tackles last season, with departed all-state nose guard Edgar Luna in front him. In comparison, linebacker Michael Geiner had a normal 58 tackles last season.

The Yoe offense will be led by quarterback Jason Kopriva, who has a state championship ring already. Kopriva passed for 39 touchdowns and 3,216 yards passing last year. Kopriva has plenty of speed in receivers Aaron Sims and Colton Shuffield.

The Yoe will be a test for the Eagles. The Eagles showed a tremendous amount of improvement during the opening game with Crockett. Look for a tough fight Friday night.
