Nora Olivia Melcher
Nora Olivia (Yurk) Grundmann Melcher was born on April 20, 1916 in Dime Box, Texas to John & Marie (Koenning) Yurk. She was baptized on June 18, 1916 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dime Box by Rev. William Mueller and confirmed on October 13, 1929 by Rev. Carl A. Stadler at St. James Lutheran Church. Nora was united in marriage to Ervin Grundmann on June 19, 1938 at Trinity Lutheran Church by Rev. G.W. Kautz. Nora and Ervin owned and operated Highway Grocery in Giddings for many years. Following Ervin’s death in 1969, Nora was united in marriage to Otto Melcher on February 4, 1971 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings by Rev. Emil Krugler. Nora worked for several years at Orsag’s and Osthoff Hardware in Giddings. She was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings where she was a member of the Ladies Aid. Nora was also a member of the American Legion York Post 276 Ladies Auxiliary in Giddings for over 54 years, and visited those in area nursing homes for many years. She enjoyed playing dominoes, dancing, traveling, and visiting and having fun with her family and friends. She loved the outdoors, nature and wildlife.
Nora was preceded in death by her parents; both her husbands; three sisters, Nonie Schulze, Edna Buenger and Nettie Hannes; brother, Elo Yurk and a step-son, Everett “Sonny” Melcher.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Audrey & Barry Mann of Austin; two grandchildren, Tim Sellars of Austin and Shelley Howard & her husband, Billy of Elgin; two great grandchildren, Evanlee and Kylee both of Elgin; two step-daughters, Ruth Placke and Pearl Richardson both of Giddings; step daughterin law, Adeline Melcher of Giddings, as well as several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner officiating. Burial followed in the Giddings City Cemetery.
Mrs. Melcher passed away on Monday, August 19, 2013 in Austin, Texas.
Serving as pallbearers were Tim Sellars, Clyde Hannes, Henry Veselka, Barry Mann, Terry Mann, Maurice Pitts Jr. and Jack Mann.
Her family would like to express their appreciation to the Gracy Woods I Nursing Center for the care and attention they gave their mom for the past six and one half years.
